n00b: help choosing subs

What is your budget? Do you want spl or sq or sql?

This will help alot.

But off the top of my head i think of DC Level 3, JL W3 or W6, and a million more. There are countless internet companies that have great woofers, and there is always the mainstream gear.

and is it the Brutus series amp?? im assuming it is.. first thing ill say is ditch the 10s and go with 12s.. what type of vehicle is it also?? theres lots of things you must consider

yea its a 1200w brutus

looked into 12s but they wont fit in the space i want to put them.

looked into jls but i dont think they can handle the power

not looking to spend too much as this is my first major system. maybe 200 each.

i listen to rock and metal and from what i have been hearing 10s in a sealed box is good for that style.

Sealed 10's will sound good and still get plenty loud. Look into the DC level 3's. Also, The W6's would take that power. For good quick response in that price range you'll be hard pressed to beat the IDQ's (Image Dynamics) woofersetc.com has them

yeah step away from all the mainstream names, JL, Kicker, etc, etc because why pay for a brand name thats gives same production as something half the price.... I'm all about maximizing my money and getting the most out of what I'm buying.. A lot of it is about trial and error and seeing whats best for you & your personal expectations.. Just make sure to buy from somewhere that has a solid return policy if you do go the trial and error route..

also you wanna make sure you get a pair of dual 4ohm subs (assuming theyre DVC) if thats the amp youre gonna be using because if you end up with some dual 2ohm subs youll end up getting about 900w RMS outta your amp

i looked up the dc and the IDQ and they arent bad. it looks like the dc matches the power handling of the memphis but the IDQ is lower then i expected. and there is not a close dc dealer to me. would it be similar if i went with the memphis?

Call up DC. If there is not a dealer close enough, they can work with you directly. They have outstanding customer service. And a product to match. The IDQ's are great woofers, but don't love crazy amounts of power. The other option would be an IDMax. Incredible sub. However, more money. Another sub i feel i need to mention is the JBL Gti mkII.

I do not have much personal experience with Memphis. So I wont try to compare anything directly. If it helps, my DC Level 4 12 ported @ 32hz hovers over most others around for SQL. And i'm proud to say, Including JL W7's. Just remember the biggest part of how you're setup will sound is your box. Also, Fi Q is a nice SQ(L) woofer. Moderately priced. You could also look at the SSA Dcon, Icon, Xcon depending on budget and power. Hope this helps your search.

Edit: I may as well add, if you have heard the Memphis and you love them, don't second guess your ears. However, all the woofers mentioned above are very, very good at doing their job.

im guessing its a clearance issue due to the diameter of the woofer. that price range reminds me of IDQ's. though you would have to be careful not to burn them up. Also check out the MB Quart reference woofers on woofersetc for only 99$ a piece. Also Diamond Audio D3's sound quite good.
