On the eve of the year's biggest party night, Mayor Michael Bloomberg approved one of the nation's toughest anti-smoking laws while Gov. George Pataki toughened the state's drunk driving statute.

The smoking ban, affecting nearly every public indoor space in the city, takes effect March 30, giving smokers one last New Year's Eve to light up in most bars and restaurants.

What the heck.....going too far now man.....being a smoker, I dissapprove.

Fine by me...

Being a non-smoker.

As was stated just today on another thread over on soundillusions, about a completely different subject... (applies here anyway)

Originally posted by DanWiggins on SoundIllusions.netThe biggest problem I see with society now days is a lack of respect for others. It seems the individual is elevated above all else. i agree with jlaine, and i approve of the nonsmoking laws... although i am suprised that he passed it considering a good number of voters are smokers and he will prolly not get re-elected now...

also being a non-smoker i think that its great, and that it should be considered nationwide (yea its a bit extreme). and if bloomberg doesnt get reelected, then we can call him a martyr (well, almost //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif )

Well I never smoke in public resturants or any other places for that matter.

I have respect for the people around me, if I have to have a smoke, I go to a remote area away from everybody, or just by other smokers doing the same.

Besides, I live in Florida, not New York..so really it doesn't bother me. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I live in NY, and this is great for me being a non smoker. Both my father and sister smoke, so it's bad enough that when I go out in public people smoke around me. I hate cigarettes, cuz not only do they kill the person smoking them, they kill me when I'm around a smoker.

well if everyone had that opinion than there probably wouldn't be a need for a ban. The problem is, most smokers don't give a rats ass about who is around them, they just need their nicotine.

I think its a good idea, but then again i think it is total BS. No smoking in bars? Come on thats freakin rediculous. If they are gonna ban cigarette smoking they might as well shut down NYC and make everyone drive electric cars...pollution is far more hazardous that cigarettes IMO. People are idiots.

I live in the city...and let me tell you...aside from that fact that I believe Bloomberg and his advisors are moronic, I don't mind the ban at all.

I, as a smoker (working on reformed...), would get disgusted going into a restaurant, passing by the bar section only to be enveloped in a cloud of smoke. These bars do not have the proper ventilation necessary to protect the non-smokers from the smoking areas. Another thing, I truly detest smelling smoke while I'm eating --- yuck...

Yes, these restaurants will suffer some business initially, perhaps, but imagine all the people that have NOT frequented these places because of the insane amount of smoke in the air.

I personally hate smoking...as long as they don't take my dip...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

even though i'm underage, i do drink sometimes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif ya not a real big surprise, but i know **** like cigs, weed & dip can really mess you up alot easier than alcohol so i say to myself "Hey, as long as I never try it then I can never get hooked" its worked so far

a law similar to that has already been around in california for years. i'm not positive if it outlaws ALL public places, but all restaurants and public shops are non-smoking

i hate smoking....it's ******* on the cancer stick, it may not bother u....but think of the people around u. They could have asthma...like me or 2 people in my family. And, personally....not that i ever would, but if i was forced to smoke either cigarettes or pot i'd choose pot. b/c with cigarettes there is absolutely no benefit, at least w/ pot u get high....lol

but....drug free is the way to be lol:D
