My subjective review of the SSA Icon

Thank you for reminding me about that.
Like I mentioned above, I thought the leads were a little long, but didn't experience any slapping. I don't like woven leads very much, as they compromise the integrity of the spider. I think that, ultimately, the best compromise is tied down leads, but they're not often used for some reason.
Good review forgot to mention that. And DB Dom can screw off. Reviewing is all about writing down opinions on testing a product. What do you think Paul Mitchell did all those years at CA@E we all read back in the late 80's/early 90's Dom??? If you have no idea who Paul Mitchell is, then you need to do your homework.

Again Punk0rama, great job. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah man, Paul Mitchell makes some of the sickest shampoo and conditioner available. Do your research mang. You're hair will never feel better.

As for the review, it is much appreciated. Don't cut any of it out. If people really want to learn about the driver, they will do the reading.

Good review but I didnt feel like reading after the second post, clean it up a little and get to the point.
are you serious:confused: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif  //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif ? It's hard enough to find people who would give such an incredible and in depth review. Go read some Sound Domain reviews if you want short and sweet and like caps locs.

Wonderful Neil, I haven't finished it yet but it's great so far.

Good review... thanks.

Two things on my end:

1) Using Goodbye Horses cracked me up. I started laughing uncontrollably when I read that. Thanks!

2) Mad World was a Tears for Fears classic... Gary Jules just made it great.

I really enjoyed you testing it in multiple enclosures instead of just throwing it in one and making your judgments based on that single experience. Maybe it will serve as a guideline for others?

Thank you for all the compliments so far. I don't do many reviews because I feel it takes a lot of work to do right. Now for some responses:

1. Multiple enclosures - It's the only way to properly review a speaker. Reviewing a speaker in a Qtc .800 enclosure and complaining about no bottom end is unfair to the manufacturer. It also helps those who are unsure of which way to go when they're deciding on their enclosure.

2. Listening area - All listening is done in my house. I have nothing in my truck and have not for a long time. The house has a really low noise floor and the transfer function is less of a dominating factor, so it's much easier to fairly judge the speaker.

3. Low pass filter - I used a 4th order (24dB/octave) filter set at 80 Hz. I don't normally play the subwoofer that high, but it's really a necessity in a review to do so as more than half of the readers will likely use it that high.

4. Comments other than mine - Someone raised a very valid question: who are these people making comments and are they valid? Well, with the exception of my girlfriend, all of them are dedicated home audio people with no less than $5K of equipment in there houses. Though they've probably overpaid, they are all very familiar with high end sound. I assure you they flipped their lid to hear what DIY performance can do at a fraction of the cost.

5. Mad World - I always forget about the Tears for Fears original. I have the LP, if that earns me any forgiveness. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Hope that covers everything. Thanks again for the positive feedback.

Oh excuse me PETER W. MITCHELL Sorry wasn't absolutely perfect on the exact name.

I need to give a huge thank you to Neil for taking so much time out and using so many different box sizes and choices. His findings with enclosures were right on, the ICON tends to give a little more in a slightly larger and lower tuned box then average.
