I've had my 2 x 10" JL 10w3v2's for about 2 years, and I really never had them sounding very good, and now they are clipping like mad, I tried turning down the gain, but then I got no bass...

I ran it by an audio shop and they tested them... said they went south...

Anyways, I'm gonna get the new Alpine Type R 10" and hopefully I get better bass out of it. I have a JL 500/1 amp, will that be enough for these two 10" type r's?

Are you serious?, holy shit batman. Well I want two, because I already have a good ported box.... so I guess it'll have to work until I can afford to buy a new amp...

Yes, and I've owned Type R 10's. For good results they take a bit more power than they're rated.

Hold on a second...
Amps clip, not subs... what exactly are you talking about here?
I recently got a new headunit, I went from an Eclipse CD7000 to a JVC KD-AVX33 ...and well when I first got it installed (professionally) it seemed like I was getting too much base, so I turned down the base boost, and then I turned down the gain... Then after fussin' with it, all the sudden my subs started clippping at medium to high volumes, and I had to continue turning down the gain.

I took it to a local car audio shop, and they got out some equipment (meters) to test the subs... Actually it was the right sub that was clipping the most, it sounded like shit.

Do you think it's my amp? or the subs?

So, you turned DOWN the gains, and then the subs/amp messed up?

Turn gains on your amp to maybe 10%, and try borrowing someone else's sub to see how it performs. If it sounds fine, your subs blew. If it sounds the same, maybe your amp is messed up.

Also, from your sig, it seems you have a mono amp. It would be impossible for one sub to sound worse than the other from the signal. Are you sure the "professional" installers didn't play with your system and blow your subs?

OK... I went to another shop today, to have a second opinion on this. It seems that the right sub is working harder than the left sub.. they are not moving in unison.

So the guy told me they are "clicking" not "clipping" and wired wrong, or one of the subs is blown. I wired them myself :embarassed:

Anycase... I'm just gonna get new subs... the Type-R, have them professionally installed, and re-wiring my amps.

If the JL's are still good, then I'll just sell them here or ebay.

Thanks for all your help!
