my sub smells horrible

And don't blame the sub or the amp (mind you if you had bought a man's sub this might not have happened, instead you are using this pink girly flower of a speaker masquerading as a sub), it is not their fault, it is the guy running the volume control......

 
if the amp is stuck in protect, your sub might be blown.
