My son's 1st upgrade...

Oh, I was seriously giddy when he said it!

I know a head unit will make a big difference, but I doubt he'll have the dough to do it all at once. I could see him going a sub/crossover/amp to start out to see where it goes. I don't think he quite realizes just how much is life is going to change with access to legit sound.
Well, let's say he starts with $200. I would start with a new head unit. Nothing too fancy. You can get a pretty decent HU, with 3-RCA preouts, for around $120. Make sure to run the contestant wire directly to the battery with at least a 12 gauge wire. Parts and labor would run another $60 to $80. Of course, it depends on where you get the install done.

You said you love Fosgate, but are you looking for less expensive options?

Here is how I would piece the system together:
  1. Head unit
  2. Front and rear Speakers
  3. Sub amp and woofer
  4. Amp for rest of the speakers. If you go with a 5ch amp, I would get the 5ch amp then the woofer.
