My 8 ohm speaker is louder then my 4 ohm speaker?

I have four mtx rtx88 speakers. They are 8 inch pro mids and are 8 ohm 150 rms with a 94db sensitivity. They are loud as **** but I wanted to try out the pioneer 8 inch pro mids. The pioneer mids look **** & have a huge magnet. They are 4 ohm 180 rms with a 96db sensitivity. Looking at the specs you think the pioneer would be louder right? Wrong! The mtx mids are louder on the same power. I thought rule of thumb was the higher the sensitivity the less power it would need to get loud. Can some explain how are these 8 ohm speaker with less sensitivity louder then the 4 ohm speakers with higher sensitivity?

It could be the difference in voicing between the speakers, for example a peak in the vocal range that is playing louder. There are multiple things to assume about your system. Also, one sensitivity rating could be 2.83V @ 1m while the other is 1w/1m. That means it's not a direct comparison of even that one specification.

Ok I was a little confused for a sec but dont get me wrong the pioneer mids sound better and have more mid bass but the mtx mids sound good also..... plus I like my **** loud lol.

Its just how the speakers are designed. You wont really know unless you waste money and try em out.

You could compare frequency graphs for them, assuming those are available. As mentioned one set might have a hump in a certain freq that makes them sound louder. If tamed down with an EQ it might not sound as loud, but probably better....

this is why People need to look for pro audio equipment on partsexpress and madisound, those sites have frequency graphs for most of their drivers.

Tis why I get my PA stuff from those sites....graphs also help with baseline xover points/slopes and EQ settings...
