My dads truck had similar problems. We went through 4 alternators thinking it was an alternator problem.

It turned out to be a bigger problem that what it was worth. Every alternator would hold solid at 11volts start up then after about 30seconds of it running it would shoot up to 14.3v. The alternators got so hot it melted the glue off the alternator coil windings. We do know it was a short and had to do with a cable being corroded and bad grounds. It was a number of problems. I can help explain more when I get home
