more thump at lower volumes

How come my subs seem to pound harder at lower volumes? I played some tracks at about 20-22 volume setting and then at 25-27. My HU maxes out at 35 and i generally dont go higher than 26 or 27. It seems like the bass is louder and it hits harder at the lower volume as opposed to when its really loud.

Whats the reason for that?

Hmmmm everything is set at level 0 on my HU, I set the sub amp to about 85% gain. Theres no audible distortion, everything sounds really good. I guess maybe it could be that the mids and highs are drowning out the sub?

What ohm are you running your subs at?
How many watts can your sub take?

and how much watts does your amp push?
its running at 1-Ohm, audiopulse revo. The amp is sundown saz1500 and i set the gain to roughly 80-85% so Im guessing its pushing out maybe 1200watts give or take?

I guess I could do that, im not an expert at setting gains by any means. I just listend to the system at volume 27 and adjusted the gains accordingly. An o-scope would definitly be more accurate.

just because your gain is at 80% doesn't mean that your pushing 1200 watts. Your gain could be set to 0 and you could be pushing 1500 watts. It depends on your hu pre-out voltage. Most head units are rate around 4-5volts but are probably closer to 2-3volts. If your gain is at 80% you are probably reaching the peak output of your amp at volume 20 that is why it doesn't get louder when you turn it up more. It's just distorting even if you can't hear it.

do you have a multimeter ?

If so do this turn everything on your amp all the way down same with the HU

but keep your head units volume 3/4 of the way up and play a 50hz test tone if you have one while the test tone is playing connect the multimeter + side to the + of the amps speaker input and do the same with the - to the - speaker input

set the multimeter to AC Volts and slowly turn the gain on the amp up till it reads

36.06 volts thats roughly 1300 watts rms.

After you have done that then you can set the bass boost and all equalization to your personal setting

but make sure to check and see if your HPF is set on your head unit for the mids

because the mids and highs prolly even out more or you may be distorting
it just seems like your sub is hitting harder, try turning your highs all the way down ans then listen to it at 22 volume, the subs will sound like beasts. You just think it hits harder.
