More space = more output?

I just got done building a box to the specs recommended by some members of this forum.

http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186627

Anyway its a 10" hype-R on a 400W mono alpine amp running at 2omhs.

I was recommended at 2.5 cubes box to make up for the low watts. My question is, why would this cause more output? I mean it sounds good and hits alright, but i kinda expected alittle more after i had two of these in a car in Alpine spec boxes (seperate) with only 300w (poweracoustik watts even so who knows?) on them and it hit HARD (for two tens).

if it's ported, a bigger box will give you more output, better thermal power handling, but sloppier response.

if it's sealed, a bigger box will give you better lowend, less mechanical power handling, and flatter response.

bigger isn't always better, it depends what you want

Less airspring = less resistance against the cone = less acceleration needed to drive the coil = less power to achieve equivalent acceleration. If you start to apply more power, you have less resistance which can lead to over excursion which will lead to a more muddy sound.

basically what he is saying is that a larger box is going to be more efficent than a smaller one.

in a nutshell.

but there is an extent to this, and it is called the VAS on a T/S param sheet. that is a value listed in liters. if (in a sealed box) you deside to go huge, do no go over double this number. the speaker will act as if in a free air enviorment.

So that doesnt apply to ported enclosures? Cuz im over on hers already, but it is a ported box.
