With the encouragement of some people here, I'm gradually tackling my own install. (It's a NEW CAR, I am reluctant to scratch the doors, but I'm going to try it anyway....).

So, stupid question #53 : I'm putting an amp (JL Audio 700/5) and subwoofer in. Where do I get the subwoofer signal? This is a stock GM head, no subwoofer out. Do I derive it from the rear? L & R? There IS a separate Sub input on the amp, so I don't think it's going to do the cross over for me...is it?

HELP! Am I missing (yet another) obvious thing?

Thanks...

If you are going to be using the factory head unit you will need a line output converter so you can provide signal to your amp additionally this is in the wrong section just a heads up.

Hmmm...confusion on both points!

I'll read about the 4 ch vs 2 ch, and respond if needed - on the other point, I appreciate the kind reminder. Too many times the direction is some smarta$$ ignorant thing that fries me.

On the other hand...this question is completely about subwoofers, so I don't know where else to put it...?

Also forgot - this amp is OK for "speaker level" inputs up to 4V, which is one reason why i'm using it - no LOC required.

It has four channels in and 5 channels out?
It has 5 in and 5 out. It (like many 4/5 channel amps) has a selector switch so that you can use 2/4/5 input signals. You can select 2 or 4 and still use the 5th channel, but with out the need of needing to have a sub input signal.

I only made the comment because it was on the classified side a line output converter provides a pair of rca outputs for a subwoofer signal just like the pre out's on a head unit would since you are have to run input rca cables from somewhere a line output converter is most likely your best bet. Unless I am totally misinterpreting what it is you're trying to say.

nkrell you are absolutely right, apologies - when I checked back, it had been moved here - to the right spot. I wondered why, when I posted earlier, I could not find it - which is why it got posted twice in SUBWOOFERS. I never meant to put in classified, that's the level of genius you're working with here!

Regarding the LOC, you're not misinterpreting, but whether I cut-n-paste head wires for the LOC, or just cut and solder BNCs to run to the amp (which in theory can do the LOC itself), I am still cutting the wires, so I'm going cheap and easy, unless it doesn't work.

Yes, that amp has 4+1 channels, so we're all set there - I DID read the directions before posting (see "genius..."), but I didn't "get" it. Now I do.

I am a home-audio nut - I can't believe the silly difficulties this car thing is giving me.
