Mixing dry and wet batteries

Batts have some combustible materials but I'm pretty sure acid and the fumes from acid are not flammable.
I think its more of a health risk for your lungs.

From an Optima MSDS:
You are such a tool! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif You really should have stopped a long time ago. You obviously have no working knowledge of lead acid batteries.

First off, we were discussing how flooded batteries should not be used in a trunk. Optima batteries are sealed AGM batteries. Even the newest noob to the board knows the difference. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Here is a quote from a book I found via the Google Book Search titled Build Your Own Electric Vehicle.

Gassing (flooded batteries)

As charging nears completion, another phenomenon takes place: hydrogen gas is given off at the negative cathode plate and oxygen gas is given off the positive anode plate. This is because any charging current beyond that required to liberate the small amount of sulfur radicals from the plates of ionizes the water in the electrolyte and begins the process of electrolysis (separating the water into hydrogen and oxygen gas). While most of the hydrogen and oxygen recombines to form water vapor (the main reason that periodic replenishing of the water is needed in this battery type), the presence of flammable ad potentially explosive hydrogen gas strongly indicates that charging be conducted in a well-ventilated area, and that you avoid lighting a cigarette.
Now that applies to non-sealed flooded batteries only. That is why it is safe to use sealed AGM batteries in the trunk, since they do not allow for the gases to escape the battery (under normal use). All of the AGM batteries I have worked with are recombinant style batteries, which simply means that all of the gases are kept inside the battery during charging and recombine inside the battery. That is why AGM batteries are safe for use inside the cabin of a vehicle.

Here is a good LINK to some very trustworthy battery information. Read it thoroughly before making a fool of yourself again here on the board.

lol, how many times do I have to correct your info before you change your mind about me? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And I never said optima wasn't AGM, don't know why you think I did.

And for the Google Book that you found, did you bother checking the date it was published?

(the main reason that periodic replenishing of the water is needed in this battery type)
There hasn't been a 'maintenance' type of battery produced in years (at least none that I know of). Unless you have a really old battery, you don't have the option of adding water like the link describes.
Actually, when you talk about an unsealed batt, most are actually sealed and have vent caps for the sole purpose to release pressure so the batt doesn't explode. Vent caps are a safety device. I'm sure you will try to prove me wrong on that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

There are very few (maybe 10-20% batts or less) that actually have real vents. These are the ones that have a vent connection to the batt in the engine compartment. I've seen group 31's have these vents and I know there are a few other groups that have them...

ok and how would they know it was used for car audio?? i could stick it in my wife truck and drive up there think before you talk

now would it make a difference on crossing the batterys if i have an isolator?

Any reason you attacked him like that? Didn't seem like he was talking shit at all to me.. I think he's just trying to help you out.

Actually, I didn't know redtops weren't covered for car audio applications by warranty. Good to know, not that I plan on running Optima batts any time soon, but good to let others know.

no but i am asking a question here and you nor anyone else has anwsered it

As for mixing flooded lead batts (non-sealed) with sealed AGM type batteries, I know plenty of people doing this with no problem at all. Sealed AGM batts tend to sit higher, so the flooded battery drains it down a bit at rest (or it may be the other way around), but nothing that should be killing batteries unless your flooded battery is already going bad.

Just ran out to the garage where the contour has a maintanance free flooded cell and it has a flamable vapor warning it.

that is what i am thinking

Old 'maintenance' batts released flammable hydrogen/oxygen which is why you had to topoff the water.

Modern car batteries only produce a large amount of hydrogen during prolonged overcharging or charging at excessively high voltage. This means they are only flammable when abused.

Car batteries using lead-antimony plates would require regular watering top-up to replace water lost due to electrolysis on each charging cycle. By changing the alloying element to calcium, more recent designs have lower water loss unless overcharged. Prolonged overcharging or charging at excessively high voltage causes some of the water in the electrolyte to be broken up into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which escape from the cells.
All of the AGM batteries I have worked with are recombinant style batteries, which simply means that all of the gases are kept inside the battery during charging and recombine inside the battery. That is why AGM batteries are safe for use inside the cabin of a vehicle.
I know your fancy website tells you otherwise, but look at the MSDS/technical data from Optima and you will see there is an explosion/fire hazard if the batts get overcharged.

Using batts for storing wind and solar energy is EXACTLY like using them for car applications. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Keep quoting from it though.
