Only thing I've used my mini/micro USB plug for is to pull the pics off my "digital camera" (an Android HTC Desire 610 I use exclusively as my digital camera because it's not connected to anything!) and I've never noticed any heating by it. Certainly possible, it's a physical electrical connection subject to heating if too much current is pulled through it.
