I don't know exactly why Mazda Rx-7's are so disliked. The weight to horsepower ratio is high, and you can get better mpg in one than you can with most of the more extreme penny pincher cars like Ford Aspires etc. I'm not saying this is some fantastic thing worth international praise or not, but driving an RX-7 is probably going to be more fun than tooling around in a 3-cyl Geo Metro, and a friend of mine beats the piss out of his and gets close to 37mpg.
This is the light I've seen them in anyway. If it weren't for the Fast and The Furious, Rx-7's would probably be an attainable, affordable alternitive to less efficient sports cars. Now they have all gone to the ricers and whatnot.
