May have bought a broken system

Hey everyone. Yesturday i was looking on craigslist for a stereo. I found a guy selling 2 12' 1000 Watt subs, a 1000 Watt amp, and a deck for 300 bucks. I stopped buy his house and picked it up that night. The subs look like they're in pretty good shape, the amp has a few scratches on it, and the deck looks alright.

My question is, is there any ways i can test these things out before i actually put them into my car? If they are broken somehow i wanna figure it out as soon as possible (its going to be weeks before i actually get this hooked up in my car, and its probably going to cost like 100 dollars at best buy to install it) so i dont spend more time and money, and i can go to the guys house and get my money back.

For the sub there isnt much that could go wrong right? Just by looking at it i should be able to tell if its ok?

I figured the amp is in decent shape, just a few scratches. The thing is rock hard so im guessing its pretty hard to break.

The front of the deck looks pretty good, and the body has black scuff marks on it. The thing that worries me is that the wires look a little singed on the end. Is that normal?

I was hoping to substitute my friends subs/amp out for mine to see if htey work but he has something wrong with his wiring at the moment. Is there any other way i could test some of this out? I wanted to hook it up to my home speaker system but im assuming it wont work because the car is DC and the power in my house is AC.

You can test the deck by temp. wiring it to your car battery. Make sure all the functions work. Same for the amp aswell. Hook up the positive and ground it on your car somewhere. The amp won't turn on unless you have the remote wire plugged in. Just cut a little piece and go from the remote to the power. It will work just for testing. Terry

hook the speakers up to a 9volt battery. if they pop out, ur (probably) good to go

the headunit, you can take the yellow and red wires, touch them to the positive post of ur car battery, while simultaneously holding the black wire coming from your headunit to the battey negative post

lesson learned - dont buy shit on craigslist and if your buying something. ask them to hook it up to show you it works before you give them the money

not trying to pee on your fire of excitment here just a little common sense is good now and then.

I sell stuff on there all the time. But like you said, I always offer to hhok it up for them and go from there. Terry

Wow thanks for the quick replies everyone. Yeah i shouldnt have bought it but it was kind of an impulse thing. Figured i knew the guys adress and phone number so i could always track him down lol. Anyways, i hooked the subs up the my stereo in my house and they work great. I'm going to try the thing where i tough my deck to the battery next. Not sure about the whole amp trick through, it doesnt really have a display on it.

Hmm not sure if i posted it above. For those of you asking, all of the parts were Sony Xplod. The guy sold me 2 12' 1000W subs and a 1000W amp. He also threw in a deck but im not sure the exact model, just that it came with the kit he bought (it looks pretty nice though). Anyways im hoping 300 was a good deal for all this? The subs sounded pretty good, if it sounds anything like that in my car ill be happy. right now i have blown out stock speakers lol. Blah

How much does best buy charge to put all that stuff in? So far my best bets outside of that are my friends friends cousin and my brother in law (but it will take him months to get around to it)

better off just trying it yourself cause more likely than not best buy will do a worse job than you will do especially if it is your first time. no offense.

eh speakers sub amp and headunit for that price are decent. would have prolly got something better imo.

but if you are new it is good. gotta start off somewhere.
