Low volume and stereo goes out over bumps

My parents 20 year old BMW car has all sorts of problems with the stereo. I just replaced the JVC stereo with a new sony GT130.

with the old stereo and this new sony, when you turn the volume all the way up you can hardly hear it, its like its not getting enough power or something. Also, when I go over bumps in the road the stereo cuts out for a second, completely looses power because the display goes off. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to car stereos.

The only way I can think of to diagnose that is to start tracing the power wire back to the battery. Hook up a 12v bulb to the wire at the back of the HU. Go over a bump and it should blink out at the same time your HU goes off. Then hook it up to the wire as it goes out of the fuse box. .. that should give you a good idea where the issue is. ... if it's in the radio, the wire to the radio, or fusebox. or you could just run a new power wire. I'm not sure how the factory radio works, but one of those wires is probably an ignition wire. You'll need to check that as well. Maybe your rents have a big heavy set of keys and that's ****ed up the switches in the ignition switch such that they clip out when the keys go into zero-G, in which case you need a new ignition switch.

theres a big heap of wires with all sorts of things spliced together behind the stereo, I have no idea where to start with cleaning it up.

No offense but this is probably over your head. Take it to a reputable shop in your area and ask them to sort it out. Prepare to spend about $100 to clean up all that wiring.
