low voltage

so i baught two ten inch mts 5500 in the sludgehammmer box just to mess with and was kinda impressed at first but then one just cut out i though i blew it. but apon later inspection i noticed it was locked up. i was told thats because of low volts. so i made sure the ground was secure (it was kinda loose) and now im thinkin about gettin anther ten to put in there but dont was to **** anther one up. no i dont have avaiblity to a dmm. any suggestions or should i just go for it and get anther ten????
