Low Gain Setting

I have a Diamond D3 400.4 Amplifier running 2 sets of Diamond D361. I turn my volume up to 30/40 and I can only turn my gains up to about 1/4- 1/3 of the way before they distort. Why does it happen so early? I have a DEH-P860MP, is it cause my preouts are high?

hmm.. supposedly (according to diamond) i am constantly clipping my amp? my d3 400.4 amp's sensitivity is 250mV - 2.5V. and high level input sensitivity is 500mV - 5V. My headunit's preout's are at 6.5 V. So I'm clipping my amp even with the gain at the lowest sensitivity?

The head unit will only output 6.5 volts @ full volume ... At 3/4 volume, you're only looking at about 2 volts ...
right, so just find the right magic number on the volume that sounds good and doesnt distort and leave it there...and get one of those warning signs for the passengers to not mess with your radio...cause one ride around the city with a buddy who likes to be the dj can mean clipping, and thats never a good thing for a extended ammount of time, trust me I know.
