Low frequency questions

I'm still in the "trying different things to see what I like" stage prior to making big purchases.

After trying some various enclosures, I definitely prefer ported and tuned lower. A couple tracks that get low:

Bass Mekanik - Machine Melt [bass Peaks from 60-16HZ]

and

Ludacris - How Low (Does anyone know what freq. this goes down to?)

My questions are - for real low stuff - I'll assume below 30 hz - where would you want your box tuned? Around 30? Just above that, like 32? Or just below that at 28? Or maybe even lower?

Subsonic filter - how many hz below box tune is a safe setting?

And finally, for sub selection, do you want to look for an fs at or near your box tune? Looking at, for example, a DC lvl 4 15", the fs is 25.6 hz. From what I understand, this is the natural resonant frequency of the driver and it follows then that this would be the frequency at which you would want your box tuned for the most control. Would you really tune an enclosure at 25 hz for this driver?

it depends on the driver and the amount of power you are givig it, although its not usually needed wilth a tuning as low as you are describing

in short no, you are looking at an SPL based sub it may sound good to you but it isnt designed to win sq trophies

OK, so an "SPL" sub is designed more for a high tuned ported enclosure and not necessarily designed to "get low". Looking at a FI-Q15. . . the Fs is about 32 hz and the recommended ported enclosure is listed as 28-33 hz, so the two match pretty well. So, does a higher Fs sub like a higher tune and lean more towards an "SPL" component whereas a low Fs sub likes a low tune and is more SQ based?
