Looking to buy a new system for my 1968' El Camino 396 SS

I'm currently restoring the car (I'm 17 and it was my mothers first car but I love it so I'm fixing it up so I can drive it) and I'm looking to put a nice system in it because I'm a huge music fan. I'm in a band, and I always have my iPod etc.

My budget total is around 1k. Not too much more than that, not too much less (unless I REALLY don't need to)

I'm not really into car audio that much, and I would really appreciate someone to just walk me through and help me price it out. I listen to mostly screamo music, so I enjoy bass (like anyone would //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif) but I'd prefer quality, and being able to clearly hear everything over just straight bass (that doesn't mean I would be opposed to being able to have bass that hit harder than a truck)

I can build a custom box for the back, because it's oddly shaped. I just don't know any of the brands, or what exactly is an ideal setup. My cousin bought his own system, and it's only decent quality, and the bass overrides everything so I thought I would do some research on the internet before I purchased everything, especially because I'm fixing up the car!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

this didnt help him. lol he needs somebody to name some audio components that he should looks at. you should def get a new head unit, door speakers, maybe some speakers in the back deck, and maybe 2 12s or 2 10s behind the seats in that little angled compartment. since you like screamo/rapid bass music, youll want some nice precise drivers that will keep up with the pace of the music and not get muddy. a sealed box will be the easiest box to build for that space, and also give you the punchy precision that youre looking for on a budget. 2 10s or 2 12s sealed will easily fill the the cabin space of the car and will sound balanced nomatter where you sit in the car. you could go with 2 nice 10s on 1000 clean watts in a sealed box, with a good head unit on a good pair of door speakers (i dont know but i think my buddy has 6x9s in his 69 el camino's doors) that will sound good on head unit power. you can use 6x9s in boxes in the back deck and wire them to the back channels of the head unit as well and that should give you a decent amount of midbass. as far as which brands and models to buy, i dont have enough time to search and post so somebody else might be able to help there.

A buddy of mine recommended JL audio so I did some shopping on Sonicelectronix and this is what I came up with.

HU: Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X794 (kdcx794) CD/MP3 Car Stereo Receiver

Speakers: JL Audio C2-690tx 6" x 9" 3-way C2 Series Speakers, C2690tx

(For these I wasn't sure how many it actually came with because it said "per pair" which implies multiple pairs? Not sure how many speakers I need anyway.

My thoughts were one in each door, then two in a box in the back for midbass?

Subs: JL Audio 12W3v3-2 (12w3v32) - 12" Car Subwoofer - Sonic Electronix

In an enclosed box

This left me at a total of $999, but that's without an amp (are they that needed to the point where I should reconsider? also I put 2x on Sonix for 6'x9' because I wasn't sure so I might have more money left over.

Other companies I was looking at were Kenwood, MTX, and Alpine (Just companies I recognized, not sure how they are)

Thanks again for any help //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

for starters, you're putting this into and el camino. you don't need a back set, there's no back in the cab of those. 1 set of speakers and 1 sub, sealed box. that's a small area you have you can put the sub in the middle that will center the sound so you don't need 2. can you even fit 2 12's in that thing? i'd say 1 nice set of 6.5in comps and a pair of 10's. jl is nice for comps but for the subs i'd say choose something else. you can get type R for half the price

Alpine SWR-1043D 10" Type-R Car Subwoofer/Sub (SWR1043D)

the hu you picked is fine. comps, you'll want to goto a few shops to hear those. what 1 person will say is good is garbage to somebody else.

If you want to waste your money buy jl. Not saying there crap but as most will say you can get way better for the money.

And i believe in stricly buying used to get the most for you money...Hell i got 2 12" type r's and a 1300rms amp for 200 bucks Another 20 for power wire...But my int speakers(fac premium) keep up with the bass so i didnt see the need to go "all out" and it looks as factory as possible.

I'd suggest a nice pioneer 860mp 8600mp or 880prs. Since its a el i'd get a decent set of comps and leave whatever other speaker locations empty. As the above poster said i'd get a 3ch to run a sub and ur comps. If you want to get a seperate amp for the 2 check out those mini shark brand amps. Heard good things and there pretty cheap..Check ebay for those.

another thing, you might want to look into finding that hu cheaper on say, ebay or amazon. you don't need and install kit or wiring harness because of the age of the car you're putting it in, there won't be one. so you may be able to save like 50-70 bux going that route.
