looking for a good head unit, good visibility in direct sunlight

Hi there,

Lately I've been interested in upgrading my car head unit. My current head unit is nowhere near visible under any sunlight, and it is really frustrating. I would like to purchase a headunit, that while having most of the features found in modern headunits, like USB/SD card readers, and MP3 CD, best of all that it is visible in direct sunlight.

Could you please give me any info on what should I look for? How can I compare head units about this feature? I was reading about Alpine BioLite technology, and Pioneer OEL (organic electro-luminescence), but I'm still quite confused on how to choose. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have personal experience with a Pioneer DEH-6800MP with the OEL display. Very visible in daylight. It is one of the older ones, no USB/card reader. But, iPod control, MP3/WMA/AAC etc. Going to use it in my next setup.

I can't comment on the Alpine's, as i have no experience with them. But the Pioneer is very visible.

well, im not restricted to alpine, pioneer or any brand. Personally, I've seen a 2 year old Kenwood head unit that is very visibile in sunlight.

Can you tell me the model of your head unit? Do all Pioneer head units employ the OEL technology? or only a select few? I've seen some Pioneer head units that look horrible in sunlight, and I've also seen Kenwood ones. That's why I'm pretty confused :/

And no, not all Pioneer HU's have the OEL display. The lower end ones, and some of the mid-range ones, still employ an LVD display, iirc. Just have to do some looking around.

Get one where you can change the angle...works best IMO

that would really help, also considering my head unit is quite low in the dash. Any models you can recommend, that have such a feature?

my Pioneer 6900UB has terrible visibility in sunlight, so stay away from any of the blue-text Pioneers....

Kenwood Excelon series has some of them as well as some Alpines
