Lookie what dave made me

Power handling, in and of itself, its a virtually meaningless spec anyway. Im amazed how often its used as the end-all be-all of rating a speaker's capability these days. Come on guys, you know better than this.

what is the point of having a set of spiders so stiff that it takes 3kw + to make the sub move? wouldn't it be far more efficient to use less spiders and thus much less power to reach reasonable excursion levels?

No point in having to throw 3kw on a sub with 5 spiders and have it sound just the same as a sub with 2 spiders and 1000w. imo

I'm sure it'll sound like *** at first because of those stiff spiders, but give it some time to break in. With that heavy friggin 8 layer coil and some broken in spiders, I imagine it will turn out fairly musical.

i"ve thought about that same thing too

With the stiff spiders like that, the coil wont take the power it will take the move the spiders.
Its a fail.
Gmonks so amazing he can tell how stiff a spider actually is by pushing it by his eyes on the computer screen, and judging it like that.

this a good point. but lets take some dbdrag classes for example. and lets throw a DD9512 in the mix...compared to a 9512 with composite cone and such making it a 9912...which one will take more power for burp in the same application?

Wattage=Acceleration=SPL

More wattage needs more suspension.

More than likely, efficiency can only get so loud due to the limitations of how low the wattage is. And more than likely it's eassier to add power and make a beefier coil than try to make a driver so efficient it reaches the same leve.

This is not always the case.

A stiffer suspension in some cases can be louder, even on the same power.

I'll be doing some testing regarding this over the next couple weeks. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

its a 3" coil... nice try
Your picture says 2.5". Maybe if you gave us the right info we could make the right judgements.

It isnt. But when the OP lists his subs specs as a 2.5" coil and says it will take 4,000rms, it obviously wont. Im not saying a 3,000rms sub would necessarily be louder than a 1,000rms sub, but saying that THIS sub will take 4,000rms is just stupid.

I can tell how stiff it is by the OP saying it has quad stiff spiders.

Maybe I missed it but I saw where he said "memphis 4kw" but I fail to see where he said it'd take the full 4kw? Also, how often do amps put out full power?

RMS.... Memphis 4kW //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
I dont see why you would put an amp to a speaker if you know it cant handle it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif Lets spend a bunch of money on a huge amp and just never turn it past 1/2 volume. Thats a great idea.

All I see is a bunch of assumptions. How do you know this guy dont already have one from a previous build? or how do you know what ohm load he's running it at?

How do you know anything? I read your urban dictionary, I know what you're all about.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

BTW FYI OMGWTFBBQ, The difference in circumphrence between the 2.5" coil and 3" coil is only 1.85" I dont see a huge difference that would just shout out "2.5" is gonna burn and 3" will take it fine.
