Lookie what dave made me

All I see is a bunch of assumptions. How do you know this guy dont already have one from a previous build? or how do you know what ohm load he's running it at?
Im guessing it will be at 1 ohm. If its not, he can correct me.

BTW FYI OMGWTFBBQ, The difference in circumphrence between the 2.5" coil and 3" coil is only 1.85" I dont see a huge difference that would just shout out "2.5" is gonna burn and 3" will take it fine.
Have you ever used subs with both 2.5" coils and subs with 3" coils. Generally there is a good bit of difference between the power they handle.

Explain more. I dont see how the words "winding height" means anything?
Well see.... Generally coils are in a shape like a "cylinder" it's like a circle, but with depth.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif The coil is 3" in diameter, aka across the circle. Still with me? Now the other part of the "cylinder" would be the length. Thats the 2.5". Still there?

Obviously. When people say 3" voice coil, they arent referring to the depth of the coil, they are referring to the diameter. Its pretty standard.
True statement. Unfortunately NO ONE "said" anything. You just chose to read the picture wrong. Probably cuz you were too busy judging the spiders stiffness wiff ur eyes.

it also did say height in the pic.

galactic eyesight failure.

joo iz gettin old

Power handling, in and of itself, its a virtually meaningless spec anyway. Im amazed how often its used as the end-all be-all of rating a speaker's capability these days. Come on guys, you know better than this.
Nope, power handling is all that matters. I'm actually amazed at how forgotten efficiency and linear cone travel have been overlooked in the last couple of years...now it's just about lvl5's, btl's, HDC's, DP's, etc.

I'd much rather have something with 30mm xmax and that ability to reach xmax off of 500-1kw than have some 15mm xmax spl sub that needs 3k to "really get moving' and sounds like ass doing it.

Depends on what ur going for duder. 15mm xmx spl subs are for SPL and thats ALL they were meant for.

If you wanna get loud and sound good then your 300 mm xmax low powered sub does the job well.

But SPL subs dont NEED much excursion 2 get loud, all they need is high BL, High watage handling and the ability to keep the cone from flying away or crashing into the backplate.

When you say you have a 3" coil, that means its 3" diameter. So anyone who says any differently or expecs you to know they are talking about a different spec when the standard is diameter is an idiot.

I know how things work, and obviously certain subs appeal to certain people. What I am referring to is the overwhelming surge of people running spl subs in their daily beaters...not talking about comps, that's a totally different story. I guess I'm just surprised that a lot of people will throw sq out the window in order to get an extra 2-3db while at the same time needing a ton of people and electrical upgrades.

If that extra 2-3db is worth it to you, why not?
