the *** is the problem i'm having with my alt setup. its F' in me in the azz hard....

Ok well I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota with a 3.7L v6..

Here is my problem, the only alt I can find thats Reputable is DC power.

but they want 620 bucks for an alt. and thats a very steep price tag for a 270 amp alt.

Now my truck controls the alt thru the PCM board and if I throw a internally regulated alt in there I'll fry my pcm board.

so... what I was thinking of was to remove any tie with my battery bank in the rear, from my stock electrical system,

and take something like an externally regulated alt and put it on the back battery bank. I know that would work, but running an externally regulated alt daily can be a problem because I could fry my batterys if they get over charged.

so if I ran internally regulated alts. Could I just run them just as I would as an externally regulated alt? i mean if I hooked up an internally regulated alt. and had it spool up with the belts just charge the rear batterys shouldn't be a problem right?

and do internally regulated alts need any control from anything like a computer etc?

or can I just take and spool them up and they do their thing?

you havent looked hard enough if the only alternator you can find is a $620 DC alternator

and being internally regulated or externally regulated doesnt make a difference, the alternator has to be regulated regardless if you have the option to change it or not. I'm not sure what you are asking here?

my friend has the same truck and has been running an excessive amperage alt on it for the past 5 years... wow has it been 5 years //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif but yeah the price tag on it was no where near 620 if i remember right it was closer to 420 and its a 235amp alt that hasnt had a problem running 4-5kw rms at idle with only a batcap 2000 in the rear

3.7 engine? I think that the problem.

OP you have a pic of the alt? Chrysler is notorious for using the same case on multiple engines, there may be something you could get from a different model

the op needs to shop around at other companys because obviously he didnt check other "Reputable" companys

lol well I've looked at Power bastards, Irragi, Dc power, mechman, Ohio Generator.

Most of them are random univeral fit alts

my factory alt is externally regulated by the factory PCM board in the ecu....

so if i throw on an internally regulated alt in the factory location, it will fry my ecu...

i'll look into the excesive amperage alt..

but I was curious if I were to throw say an internally regulated alt on the truck, along with the factory one, just using the internally regulated alt to charge the battery bank, would that work? or would I need to have some sort of stand alone unit with the alt to get it to work?

like can I take the alt. and get it spinning with the belts and what not and just drop my charging wire to the stud?

I think youre looking too far into this. Call one of the companies that produce the alternators and get their opinion, they produce and test them for a living. Also Knu Konceptz is starting to make alternators.

well. basicly what I need to know. is that with an internally regulated alt. like most alts are these days. If I take a random alt say like a 300 amp alt... thats internally regulated and drop it on my engine. will I need anything else to run it? like a stand alone module... I know there are people who have universal alts and what not. just trying to see, that if I drop this alt on a belt and have it spinning, and a wire run to the back battery bank, will it do anything? or will it cause some problems, and what would I need to do to run it.

did u call nate? like i said same exact truck and the alt is still going strong 5 years later how much more do you need for proof? 05 dakota 3.7 v6 stop looking so far into it and just get a ho alt and you will be happy

There are so many H/o alt companies out there that probably make what your looking for, you just need to contact them to see if they make something for that exact application... and im assuming that many of these companies would be willing to make something custom if you talk to them about it

Right now I am dealing with Dom of Iraggi Alternators to design a custom alt for my bug,

When i started my search i knew no one was gonna to make something that would fit my application so i started contacting companies to see if they were willing to get creative. Iraggi was the only one to respond so thats what i went with

You just need to search and search and then get into contact with them stating application need and price range, most will be willing to help out

I know for the right price anybody will make anything lol... but here is what i'm looking for.

an alt that I can have spooled up from the engine and will charge the back battery bank. that has decent power for a good price. I was looking at a lot of different companies...

I just want to make sure that the alt I stick in my truck when it is running will work as it needs to.

I'm not looking for anything vehicle specific to my truck, but all I want is what they claim for power, and when I stick it under the hood all I have to do is bolt it down in the custom bracketing, throw the wire on the charging stud and forget about it.....

so as for the guy at exxesive amperage... i called and left a message. both for my truck, and what I wan't if there isn't something direct fit.

the main problem is MOST people don't want to build an alt for this truck because the fact its computer regulated. so if the voltage or input supply is too high, it will fry my main component board.

its nice to hear the guy has a 230 amp alt that works great.... but I wonder how much for it.? because looking at other prices. I believe that I can get the same power for half the price. I just want to ensure its going to work for what I have in mind thats all.
