can someone explain the benefits and disadvantages of the way this box is set up? is it better than just normal ported? or does it help if the subwoofers face eachother? check it out it looks prety neat

i heard bandpass boxes are very dangerous for subwoofers because distortion is hard to hear till the sub has gone bad........don't know if its a fact but thats from what i've heard........great looking install though...can't take away from that....

This is true to an extent. The mechanical noises from slapping the backplate or buzzing is attenuated because they are usually not in the "passband" of the tuning, so they can be missed when overpowering. I dont see one valid reason in your post why subs in a bandpass setup need to face each other. I agree it generally looks better, but many bandpass setups have the subs fire the same direction (not at each other), or at angles. If you must face the subs at each other in order to guarantee enclosure volume space, there's something wrong with your fabrication skills.

When designing a dual sub 4th order bandpass enclosure, it's important to get both ported chambers the exact same volume. If the subs are not facing eachother, the cone of one sub would be in its ported enclosure, while the motor of the other sub would be in its ported enclosure. This would offset the volume in the ported side. Changing that volume changes how the box sounds, so one side would sound different than the other. I know you can compensate by increasing the size of the ported side where the sub has the motor in the sealed enclosure, but the problem is that you do not know the exact displacement of the motor side of the sub. So your volumes won't be equal. Would it make a huge impact? Probably not. But I don't think it's a good idea.

I understand what you are saying, but they do not need tof ace each other to avoid that problem. One can be mounted inverted, for example.

You need to stop answering about bandpass setups until you actually know what you are talking about.
First of all, BP's are louder than the average ported enclousre. I have no idea where you get the notion of a -3db drop, BP's are quite notorious for being efficient.

They do have a limited passband, but when made properly and blended correctly with the rest of the system, they can offer an extremely efficient setup that sounds very very good. The fact that you've never experienced one of these BP setups does not mean they do not exist.
