I've been a long time poster over on caraudioforum, and I've been in car audio for about 2-3 years now. I've had a lot of strange problems happen to my setup, however recently I've got one that has me completely lost. Maybe you folks can shed some light.
Story:
I had a Pioneer DEH-1500. Somehow the preouts blew out of it, so I went to Circuit City and got a line output converter as recommended by other members of the forums on CAF. I rigged up the LOC and magically everything was working again and I was happy. Recently I went ahead and bought a new deck, a JVC G710 or something or another. Anyway, my output SUCKED. My sub was hitting like I was running it off of the head unit. So I was lost. But I went back to Circuit City and saw I could get the 4700 for 10 bucks cheaper than the JVC. So I figured the problem was with the JVC, took it back, got the 4700 and saved myself a whole 10 dollars and 60 cents for a better deck (according to my own opinion + other folks input).
By the way, I am running a Tsunami DB1100 @ 2 ohm for 650 RMS on an RE SE 15, 2.2 cube sealed.
I came home with the Pioneer 4700, rigged it up, etc. Excitedly turned my car on, saw the radio light up................................................. same deal, sounds like the sub is running off of the head unit. Confused, I started weighing out the situation. Besides changing the deck, which should NOT of drastically changed my output as it did, I figured the only other possibility was the line output converter, I just figured that maybe the LOC just boosted the signal THAT much and that's what gave me the additional output.
But then I started thinking logically. Now, if the way my setup is now is normal, then I can guarantee you there are a LOT of pissed off folks out there right now who are running setups in the 600 watt range, because I'm getting about 2 mm of movement in the sub, and I know **** well ANYBODY who would spend 400+ dollars on a decent amp and nice sub that they would be greatly disappointed in what they heard. So I ruled out the fact that there are no problems with my setup and I'm just not used to the normal, but lower, output of the setup.
So I'm here lost. I don't know what to do. Everything is plugged in. I retuned everything on the amp, in fact for kicks I turned the gain up 100% of the way on the amp and it sounds about 1/10 of what it used to, but before I had my gain 50% of the way and had 300x more power. For kicks, I plugged in the line output converter again, plugged in the RCAs, etc, BOOM the sub started moving pretty nicely. Plugged everything into the deck.... blahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... back to 2 mm of travel.
To wrap it all up: The 650 watts my 15 inch RE SE is seeing sounds like it's being fed 50 watts. Using an LOC completely changes the output to where it should be, but I shouldn't HAVE to use an LOC.
This is one of those "gotta find the answer before I go f*cking nuts" kind of situations. I could easily hook up the LOC and roll with that, but I just want to figure out what the problem is.
ANNNNNNNNNY insight folks? Thanks in advance.
