Little help finding a good valued SQ/SQL type 10-12" for this box size -

Title says most of what my goals are - and yes, I know there is no real such thing as SQL, but I am looking for something that has a little punch to it, but is very, very clean and accurate - a cross between sq and spl, leaning toward sq.

Brief backround - was into car audio in the mid to late 90's, got a real job, house and stuff, lost the time and interest for a while. Recently found myself missing fuller sound, and want to do some upgrades to get CLEAN sound in my car. I don't care about the neighbors hearing it, I am never going to compete. That doesn't make me happy in the pants, just want it clean, and loud enough to where I can discern everything on the track. Stock system is ok, but lacks in range and clarity.

I have heard a lot of good about some of the DD, Fi, RE subs, but not sure what I have room for (heard AA and Mach 5 were good value lines). Basically, here is some more info and some pics, lemme know what you think -

Car: is300 (lexus) daily driver

Deck: Currently stock, did a preout mod, puts out a clean signal to some RCA's.

Front components and rears: Stock currently as well, upgrading as soon as I get some bass (which I have nearly none of now).

Goal: Clean punchy bass to fill in where I have none. I like to feel it some, but don't care if it's not gonna impress hardcore bassheads.

Music: Mostly Punk, Rock, Ska, Reggae, some metal, and to a lesser extent H/H & R/B - basically everything.

Current Amp (will change within the next 3-6 months): Eclipse 34230

Amp Specs:

550W x 2 Channel Max. Power Output at 4 ohms Stereo

370W x 2 Channel 0.1% THD at 4 ohms Stereo, 20-20,000Hz at 13.8V (RMS Continuous Power)

ChannelFlex Crossover Adjustable Low-Pass Crossover (12dB/octave, 50-200Hz) Adjustable Pre-Out High-Pass Crossover (12dB/octave, 50-200Hz)

Subsonic Filter (0-60Hz)

Free-Flow Signal Circuit

Double-Sided PCB

Audiophile Grade Component Selection

Intelligent 7-Way Discrete Protection Circuitry

Now Enclosure info -

This is what I plan on building. It will sit in my trunk and not take up a ton of space. I use my trunk a lot to haul stuff for my daughter, and carry some of my guitar gear. I can't afford a box much bigger. I can go as big as 2.1 ft^3 if it's absolutely required. This box is 1.75 before displacement, which will include the speaker and some minor bracing to minimize flex. It will fit in the trunk, facing rear, and the face will form to mold around the rear left wheel well.

This all being said, here are my questions:

1) What speaker will suit me well now with 2 channels x 400w RMS (1 ch per VC in a DVC?) but also take a little more in the event I got to a class D mono amp down the road?

2) Should I go for 10" due to lack of space?

3) Do I have enough room for a ported box? (would use 1 or 2 aero ports preferrably depending on recommendations of port area). Would I even want a ported box? (seems that a good ported box can be nearly as 'tight' sounding as a good sealed box these days, I don't remember that being the case 10-15 years ago). If ported, what should I tune to for the kind of music I listen to (lets just say rock or reggae style - electric bass guitar).

Thank you much in advance for any help. I am looking forward to being a part of the community here, looks like there are some knowledgeable people around.

I have already ordered a 1/0 wire kit, and will be installing that this weekend. WIll use stock battery and alt for now, but will likely upgrade with I replace H/U and get some good amp'd components and new 6.5 rears.

Sorry for long post, just wanted to make sure I gave enough quality info for you whiz's out there to make a good informed recommendation. I am not wanting to spend more than $250 ish, but will buy used from a reputable source. I am starting medical school soon, and money is slim enough as it is. We are selling our house, so a few months down the road, will be a little different, but I don't want to upgrade the sub anytime in the next year or two.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif

Take Care - FC:furious:

Thanks for the responses so far guys, any chance someone could tell me if I should go for 1 or 2 aeroports or just stick with sealed? If ported, what should I tune to for good clear bass reproduction of electic bass guitar freq's? I was thinking 35-38ish.

Where can I find DLS subs?

Also, after realizing how cheap a decent 1k+ amp is now (compared to 5-10 years ago) I would seriously consider a sooner upgrade if it meant a much better sound. I realized the sub would likely overpower the rest of the system quite a bit till I replaced the head and got some good amped mid/highs.

Would anything sound good for a short bit of clean 400w, but also handle 1k?

Sounds like 10" may be the way to go? 1.75-2.0cu sealed or 1.75ish (after displacement) ported.

I am leaning toward the Fi, just because they seem accessible and have spoken to someone with similar goals/setup. Though, he was running a Fi Q...

basically, I am still undecided. lol.

Bump for some more responses. Baby Jesus cries when I don't get responses.

If you want to keep it to a smaller box and use a bigger sub like the DLS, you would be MORE than fine with 1.2 - 1.5 cu ft of space. It was a BEAST in my 1.2 cu ft enclosure and its not even meant for sealed apps.

specs are at the above link, PM 6spdcoupe on these forums for pricing and purchasing info, I got mine from him.
