No, the innocent party is weak if they let a joke rattle them so much that they kill themselves.
In my opinion, a joke is either way off the mark, and easily ignored, or too close to home, and thus hitting something that you have either done wrong and should rightly feel bad about, or something that was not wrong and that you should stop punishing yourself for.

Regardless, the beauty of free speech is that, even if you feel greatly offended by something said (not done), you can defend yourself with as much vitriol as you like.

I don't expect a 14 year old girl to be as strong as someone who spends most of their day trolling internet forums. Perhaps I have different a different perspective, but I am against blasting children on national television who didn't make a choice to be in the spotlight. I dunno about the Candadians, but young girls in the US have self esteem that's shattered about as easily as glass, which is why they turn to ***, drugs, etc.

So which is the problem: the joke, or their self-esteem?

To reiterate, there will always be someone who says something that you disagree with or find offensive. It is up to you to put that comment where it belongs. I don't believe the joke was targeted at her 14 year old daughter, but even still, it is more important that she learn to ignore it than it is to ***** at David Letterman about a joke.

This whole thing is a campaign ploy by Palin. She is trying to rally up her right wing, bible thumping, conservative wasps in support of her. Bush apparently won because of his so called morals, so when she hits the campaign trail, she has something to rile these wasps and get them to the polls.
