You should really just compare both models on Alpine's website.
www.alpine-usa.com
But here's a quick comparison for you.
The
MRD-M1001 is last years alpine model, but both amps should prove to have similar output. Some obvious differences, it relies on a passive cooling system, has a parametric EQ and a frequency response of 20-200hz @ 60db s/n ratio.
The
MRD-M1005 is the 2005 model with new and IMO questionably improved cosmetics. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif The footprint of this amp is much smaller since it relies on an active thermal management system. (It uses a fan) The amp also has no para-eq but has an improved frequency response from 10-500 hz and a much better s/n ratio at 90 db.
I've always thought that Alpine has some nice products, but it's disappointing to see the s/n ratio of the MRD-1001 so low, at 60 db. Granted you most likely wouldn't be able to notice when driving a sub, but that rating is terribly low for an amp of any kind.
Out of the two I'd still probably prefer the older model, as I don't like fans that add noice to my system and **** in dirt after time. The cosmetics of their new line leave much to be desired, and I get the feeling that the new product is a scaled back version of their past offerings, hence the lower retail of the MRD-1005.
But I have rather old school tastes when it comes to things like this, and my opinion isn't necessarily the right one for you. Either amp will most likely provide you with years of enjoyment.
