Okay before I ask this question, I will say that I have posted on both the dell tech support forum and a computer gaming enthusiast forum I go to and havent really gotten any responses so far, so I figured I may as well try here. The ****ing dell support forum is about as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Laptop Specs:

1.83 ghz Intel Core Duo

1 gig ram

100gb 5200 rpm hdd

Geforce fx7900GS GO 256mb

XP media center edition 2005

Now for the problem:

:: LONG VERSION (summary at the bottom if u dont want to read) ::

I bought an e1705 last summer, and it's been a relatively good laptop except for one thing... the video card. about 4 months ago it started giving me blue screens and errors, and i figured out that it was a bad video card, and needed to be sent in for replacement, which I had planned on doing. Well, they quoted me 1.5 weeks at the least for the total time the laptop would be gone... and i was in college at the time so thats a no can do for me. I couldn't ever find a couple weeks where I didn't need the laptop.

Also now, sometimes when I restart, the windows loading screen with the moving bar will not come up, and I have to turn the computer off and back on again. Sometimes it will do it repeatedly in a row, sometimes it won't. Also, I get random colored pixels that occur in random areas of my screen sometimes as well. On startup, at the windows loading screen there will be about 30 dots randomly plotted. On my desktop, maybe 3-5 at certain times, other times none.

Anyways, now that i'm out for summer, it is no longer under warranty, so I guess I have to buy a video card myself, not really a big deal since its my fault I couldnt get the laptop out I guess. I was just wondering what is the biggest video card that can fit in the E1705s. Will it be able to hold a GO 7950 GTX or some other newer video card?

I currently have a 7900gs and would like to upgrade if possible.

I got this code from the Dell Scan accessed from the Bios, and other scans reported similar results just no error code.

Error Code: 5300:0119

(which is a Video Memory Error)

:: SHORT VERSION ::

- Laptop is out of warranty

- Video card has been going bad for a few months

- Want to get it replaced ASAP because its been getting slightly worse over time, so hopefully it wont crap out on me.

- I want to know the biggest card that can fit in a Dell E1705. The 7900gs that is in my laptop has only a single heat pipe i'm pretty sure, so I assume that it can not fit any card that has 2, but im just assuming here because im not as familiar with laptops as i am with desktops. The reason for this is if I only have to spend an extra $50 or so bucks, I would most likely want to upgrade if possible, as I don't want to buy a brand new 7900gs that will be obsolete in 3 months. So anyone who is very familiar with laptop graphics cards, I could use some help. Thanks.

Here's an article from Legitreviews on how to replace the graphics card in your laptop:
http://legitreviews.com/article/349/1/

Basically it says that only single-pipe cards will fit in and, as a result, you're pretty much left with the 7900 GS (the 7900 GTX and 7950 GTX are both dual-pipe). You may be able to fit the GeForce 8700M GT, which is supposed to be on-par w/ the 7950 GTX (according to Nvidia, at least).

From looking around on Google, the 7900 GS is going to cost you roughly $350 from Dell.
Thanks a lot. I'm pretty good with computers, and I know how to replace the card, but my only thing was I wasn't sure exactly what would fit. Honestly, if I can't upgrade then I'm probably not even going to buy one right now. I can just wait until it dies, and then just buy a new one then.

Also, Ive found a few 7900GS's on eBay in the past couplle weeks for around $200, so I think that would be my best bet since I can't get anything better.

I appreciate the help.

Oh, and the 8700 gt is actually going to be better than the 7900 gtx, although only slightly.

I have no idea whether it is going to be single or dual pipe though.
