Laid off?

The thing to understand is that now the United States is no longer an Industrial Nation. Those times have passed. The market simply cannot support paying wages and fringes in excess of $70/hr to "unskilled" labor in the manufacturing field. Note that figure is inclusive of both hourly wage AND benefits.

There is no longer a market in the United States for those prices. Mexico and China are experiencing their Industrial Revolution at the cost of our manufacturing jobs.

Why should companies pay for re-skilling their employees when there are folks across the border willing to be paid a fraction of the price while still achieving the same if not greater quality? We make our own decisions were we want to take our lives and careers; in this country we are free to do that. It's a wonderful thing. Don't like your job? Do something about it! No one is forcing you to keep it; no one is holding you back from getting a job that pays better. It is incumbent upon you to ultimately find the career path, based on your own credentials, that will make you happy.

While there is obviously some truth in that it is not feasible for everyone to reskill. In a perfect world maybe.

But you are certainly correct about the manufacturing jobs being gone. This is the information age. There is lots of money to be made there, but not everyone has the resources, know how or drive to go out and get it.

If every company moves overseas...who will buy all the products they are producing?
Only manufacturing is moving overseas. The service industry isnt going anywhere. With the exception of call centers that is. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But that is the issue...we can't all work in the service industry. There just isn't enough demand.

If the workers overseas can't afford our services, and domestics cannot afford the services because of depressed wages...who is going to purchase them?

I dont see it that way but maybe its my perspective. I see more jobs in the service industary now than ever and that number is only growing.

IT, retail, mechanics, electricians, carpenters all the way to bankers, doctors, lawyers also including information and things of that nature. I see what you mean by the lower skilled jobs but I just dont see it as much of a problem considering some of the other problems we have here. And if the government sees a need for jobs they just create them. Look at the IRS. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Also defense manufacturing will probably always stay here.

My theory is that it will all balance out eventually. Yes, it will be, and is at the cost of our economy – but sooner or later all those people getting paid chicken scratch to perform work they know Americans used to be paid large amounts for will demand it for themselves. China is an example of this. The Chinese want the American lifestyle so badly!

No, we can't all work in the service industry.

We also need to stop the Brian Drain that occurs so frequently here. University of Michigan is a 15 minute ride from me. The population of foreign students attending there is astronomical. They get their U of M education, and return home to their own countries and provide social and economic benefit there. The only economic benefit we get in Michigan is a little tuition, and revenue from housing and beer sales. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif

It will hopefully balance out. But like Flip said that is why we need economists to help with the problem.

Pay also needs to be increased but as stated we need to figure out how to work that into the problem.

The problem is there are so many problems we are facing right now.
