The L-port uses the wall as part of the port, giving you more internal volume, if you make the port in the middle you just loose a little total internal volume.

It's not just as simple as moving it to the middle. Your best choice would be to divide the box in half, and build two ports on each side of that division. If you need help with the designs, let me know.
