Kill switch / Bass Knob ?

I just got a sub in my car, and right now I have some like Bass Boost knob. I have it because if I do not want bass I can turn that all the way to minimum and then turn the bass on my radio settings down and then all the bass is gone. Sounds like it is completely off. I've been reading and every time a bass boost knob comes up people say it is very bad and will kill the sub.

EDIT: So I looked around, and I have a 16 ft turn-on wire running from my amp to a 20A fuse in my fuse box. I'm guessing that means when I turn the car off and on the amp will do the same. So if I just put a switch on that wire, will I be able to turn the amp off and on when the car is on? And my battery will not drain if left on?

People normally advise the use of the bass knobs that run back to the amp because it's basically a gain pot you can control on the fly and too many people don't know how to set gains properly - it's not a volume knob.

If you have this type of knob it's fine for turning it down, so long as you know at what point it'll clip when your turn it back up and don't stray too far beyond that.

I'd suggest getting an RCA level controller knob like this one. Set the gains properly with it all the way up and you can turn it town as much as you want from there. You can completely cut it out with just the knob and no clipping:

Amazon.com: PAC LC-1 Remote Amplifier Level Controller: Car Electronics

Mine was a remote boost knob, but I just got rid of it. I installed a toggle switch and it works perfectly. The bass sounds a little better too since it is not hitting harder at 50 Hz compared to everything else.

Edit: Do not know why it linked a remote boost knob when I wrote that, but that was not the one I had just to be clear, lol.
