Does the difference between the power of a sine wave and what you get with music ring a bell with anyone? Regardless of what the amp is rated for, he's getting less than half (a lot less most of the time without even considering impedance rise) of that power on average. Power rating for a sub is for average power over time since it is a rating of how well the coil can shed heat. Unless the person using the system is an idiot, you can run a bigger amp on any speaker worth a ****. That doesn't mean that the speaker is underrated it means that music isn't continuous.
