Spoiler to keep you reading – this is where we are now:

Several years ago, I built up a 2005 Scion tC for a friend. That build log is here: http://www.caraudio.com/forums/car-audio-build-logs-cars-trucks-suvs/516096-2005-scion-tc-sq-hertz-audison-pioneer-build-log.html

A few years ago, I made another friend with a 2011 Scion tC – we met through the forums and it turns out we are in the same town. He had a system installed by a local shop (that went out of business promptly after). That shop cut a lot of corners and delivered a poorly functioning system. This build log will walk through our efforts, as there are several intermediate steps through now.

The first thing I noticed was the JL ZR650ci tweeters weren’t working. So I looked into the system, tested all components, and determined both tweeters were blown. My buddy says they always sounded muted up front so I suspect they either gave him blown tweeters or mixed up the crossover outputs. Either way, we ordered new tweeters and installed them on the doors, not tucked inside the doors.

The scion comes with a factory 3-way front. My buddy wanted a 3-way to go in there but the ZR series doesn’t have a matching mid. Maybe in the future.

The first time I modified the amp rack, I added the MS8. The cap used to be between the amps, but that was a better place for the MS8. The wiring under the rack was loose and haphazard. This is what the previous shop had done:

I revised wiring and used wire tie mounts to secure wiring under the board

We ran the rears off the MS-8 internal amplifer for fill. The ZR650ci were ran active off the JL HD600/4.

Recently, by buddy purchased another JL HD600/4 and JL ZR800CW midbass.

We decided to implement the 8” midbass into a new sub enclosure. This enclosure has sealed chambers for the midbass drivers.

Recently, we tore into the rear half of the car. We found the “install” by the previous shop for the rear speakers. Apparently, they though mounting screws were overrated. They used braces, which allowed the speaker to settle into them, luckily, the surrounds weren’t damaged

We stripped the rear interior

We stuffed all cavities with ultratouch insulation (or similar)

The amp rack was rebuilt from scratch. OSB was used for water resistance, strength, and ability to hold screws. MDF was used for supports.

Equipment to be placed

Cardboard was used to trace the shape

Trunk floor was deadened, foamed, and stuffed

Layout was planned

Routing was achieved with wire mounts and planning. Wood blocks hold the amps up over the wiring.

Nice! But I've gotta ask, why have the Stinger cap?
he had the 20F cap already, and he hasn't had dimming or voltage drop issues, so why mess with it? it isn't hurting the system and it will contribute a bit to peak demand. I run a 500F cap bank.

Those rcas are gonna be quite close to those power wires :/
also curious. Do batteries produce EM fields like wires do with current through them?
90 deg crossings are immune to EMF. back at the rear of the amp, proximity of signal and power is inevitable. it's a downside of having all connections on one side. you won't get noise from DC EMF. Noise would come from ground loops and potential between system grounding points. DC batteries won't produce EMF that we are concerned about.

Very well done. Looks extremely nice. I love the mid bass in the sub box. Looks pretty sweet and custom!

Gotcha, I remember seeing your build with maxwell blue caps
