Depends on the kind of wood and the thickness. Plywood has a lot more bend to it than mdf, and thus you can get away with thicker kerf cuts. Mdf on the other hand is brittle and requires smaller kerfs. Just take a piece of scrap and play with it to get the thickness right. 1/8" is a good starting point with 3/4" mdf though.
