Kenwood XXV-01D Questions

Hey all, I was trying to find info on this unit on the web but I couldn't find much related to my issue. But, most of the general info I came across was on this forum, so I figured this would be my best shot.

I got this HU used a couple weeks back, and just got done installing it in my '99 Grand Prix GTP (non-Bose). I was hoping for a better rounded sound from my speakers (stock back for now, and JBL GTO528 http://www.amazon.com/JBL-GTO528-5-25-Inch-2-Way-Loudspeaker/dp/B003KN2TEE/ref=sr_1_1?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1450656803&sr=1-1&keywords=JBL+GTO+5.25 up front).

I know pretty much nothing about the intricacies of car audio. But, I'm read to learn.

So, my issue is that after installing the HU, the bass and some highs sound really muffled and distorted. My stock speakers didn't sound very good with the two old stock HUs I had in it, but I figured that was from the HUs themselves as I tried an aftermarket HU and the speakers sounded better (but that HU was old and has issues). So, when I saw a deal on this HU used I did a little research and figured it would be pretty decent and maybe improve my speakers and hopefully I could get good sound out of the fronts. Not expecting any sort of extreme bass or highs, just want to get rid of the muffled sounds and maybe have a little usable bass.

If anyone could direct me on what to fool around with in these convoluted menus that would be great.

Did you go into the menu and turn off all the crossover options?

What source are you using?

Also, you'll want to set your crossover settings and filters as well.

The biggest improvement would to treat the doors/deaden them.

Those speakers also have a free air response of 92.1hz, you aren't going to get a very good midbass response from them.

No, I didn't really touch anything in any menus besides to turn AUX on.

You want to run the rears more for fill but, to you could try to use them to compensate for lack of midbass.

I don't think I'd want to run a 2way, I would probably run a dedicated midbass 6x9 I think. Unless you really need more vocals. You may also be better investing in a component set in the front that provides a bit more midbass. Not many coaxials on the market that offer great midbass and midrange.

Here is a good kit that should be good enough for both of your doors. You'll want to try and seal your door up as well as possible.

Do you have these speakers amped or on deck power?

You'll likely want to cross them over around 100hz, possibly 80 depending on how much power they are getting. I don't think they'd do too well below that.

So HPF, try 80, try 100... if they can go lower, feel free to try it out.

If you're using a phone they have built in DAC's which **** almost all of the time, listening to a better source like USB or CD with high quality files (Flac, Wav, etc) will yield in better results as well.
