Keep sony head unit or get something else?

Hey guys i currently have a Sony mex-xb100bt which has a built in amp and puts out 40 watts per channel. I was looking the other day and I still have time to send this head unit back I like it but i want a single din touchscreen radio. I was looking at the pioneer avh-x7800bt which is single din touchscreen and it's pretty nice but 40 watts per channel is alot of power. This is my speaker setup = 4 stock infinity speakers in a jeep, a rockford Fosgate amp that puts out 40 watts per channel also to only 2 Rockford 6x8s in a custom box. If I switch to the pioneer avh-x7800bt will the factory speakers be more quiter? And do you guys think the pioneer head unit I was looking at is good for sound? Also any recommendations on radios would be awesome.

Never believe the wattage rating of a deck. If it says 40x4, its more realistically 13x4 tops.

Let me see if i have this right, you have the stock fronts and rears (infinity) and some rockford 6.8's in (probably) wedge boxes in the rear run off a rockford amp?

If this is the case, then youll likely be best served getting some better speakers up front and putting that rockford on them. Midbass might suffer as the 6x8's are pretty good at that(esp if the custom box is well suited for that), but sound overall would improve.

And yes, pioneer>sony for 99% of car audio

also worth noting, are you dead set on a motorized din unit? You can get WAY better sound for the same price if you get a deh-80prs. Thats pretty much the best deck you can get for under $500, hell itll probably whoop offerings in the $800 range. A bit dated now, but its an audio powerhouse

No the sony radio is the only radio that has a built in amp look it up they did a test on sonic electronix its the only radio that has a built in amp I think and it was certified 40 watts per channel lol its actually pretty crazy. But even then yes I have stock speakers in the front and rear but I like the way everything sounds right now it's very loud and crisp and clear. Would the volume decrease that much if I switch over to the pioneer? I mean if it's stock speakers they can't do 40 watts anyways right?

Well im not a real audiophile or anything like that I like good sound but it doesn't have to be perfect lol. I mean the pioneer avh-x7800bt has a lot of audio features to right? It has time alignment stuff like that.

that is an oddball indeed. Says it has a class d built in and even a small sub channel. If its really putting out 40 watts, then it wont be as loud on the pioneer. Very strange deck indeed.

Yeah the pioneer does have time alignment, 24 bit da converter, 13 band eq, 4 volt pre out etc etc

80prs would be wayyyyyy overkill for what he is running. Almost all headunits have built in amps. There are a few "dead heads". I would stick with the Sony you have now if you like the sound. I'm sure you would notice a difference between 40 watts and 15

i know, but he was talking about throwing $380 on this pioneer 7" flipout and i was just trying to illustrate what he could really get for that money if hes not dead set on a flip out screen.

that sony does have some decent specs listed

It sounds like you really don't want to get too elaborate with your car audio sound system. It sounds like you just want to run everything off of your head unit and that be the end of it. If that is the case, then definitely keep the Sony MEX-XB100BT. There is no reason to get any other. Even if you decide to get an amp, that head unit has a preamp voltage of 5 volts, which is better than almost any other head unit out there.

But, if you are thinking of going going active and don't want to spend the money on a Pioneer DEH-80PRS, then look at this Pioneer MVH-X580BT. I just very recently heard of this head unit and it looks very nice. I just can't seem to find anyone who sells the darn thing, except Ebay. The Pioneer website has info on it, although not a lot of technical info. It's not real expensive, either. At least, prices on Ebay are showing it'll cost you about $150.

But, as I said, if you are not going to go active and will just run everything off of the head unit, keep the Sony you currently have. It really is a pretty nice head unit. And, yes, you are correct about it's power output. It will do a true 40 watts RMS for 4 channels.

btw i am looking to replace the stock speakers i guess with 2 nice 6x9s and 6.5s could you guys recommend me any speakers that would go good with the radio 40 watts per channel? And would it be louder than it is now if i replace them? See right now if i turn my radio up past 43 or 44 the bass distorts terribly does that mean i should get speakers that have more rms?

the loudness youll get is based on the speakers db sensitivity if youre connecting them to the same h/u. did you set the hpf on the deck to the fronts and rears?

no the sony deck is actually 40 rms on the amp dyno. Its a good deck for most average joes and bassheads, requires a direct 10 gauge run to the batt. Its really not that bad of a head unit. also has 24 bit dac, time alignment and a few other options. Perfect for a stealth install as well since you can wire front and rear to one channel at 2 ohms and use the other for an efficient low powered sub.

the rear bass enhancer thing does pretty well. Used tang band 6x9s subwoofers on the rear deck and a pair of components for a buddy's setup. Sounds like two 10s in a sealed on 500 watts in his car due to the sound directed straight into the cabin.
