Keep gains low?

I was to told to keep gain low. probably so i dont blow the subs but i am pretty new to all of this and wondering what that meant . I have a 10in Diamond d3 sub and soundstream 1.400 amp (400rms). i just recieved the amp and i see where the 2v- 6v setting is. What is this exactly and what do you think i should set it at to keep gains "low"? And it has 3 setting of bass boast, should i keep it off? thanks. and if i max out everything 6v and bass boast on high would i blow the subs? thanks for any help.

2v is "higher" than 6v. Leave the bass boost off. There are lots of tutorials on how to set your gain with a digital multi meter. That would be my recommendation.
