Keep cranking gain till distortion on O scope??

Hi, is it good to keep turning the gain up just before the distorted sine wave shows on the O scope? But even though the signal is clean we might be way overpowering the speakers, so this is another reason for hearng distortion right? Then what is the best method, using the DMM? Thx

 
1.) use DMM/Oscope.

2.) mark this point.

3.) adjust using ear as desired.

you are correct. the maximum undistorted power may not actually be the best setting. people who go with the DMM method can use the HU or other volume controls to adjust the levels.
