JVC KD-AVX2 DPLII -> No SUBOUT???

I just start working out the install of my AVX2 and I noticed that when I enable the Dolby Pro Logic II modes (for CDs) that the SUBOUT is silent. I know the SUBOUT is connected correctly since I can play 5.1 discs and adjust the sub on/off from the setup screen and I also have sub output in non surround CD mode.

Can anyone verify that DPLII modes work as it should (4.1/5.1 upmix from 2 channel source)? Is this a flaw by design or just with my unit? I have a email into JVC customer support but I doubt I will get any help.

Sorta (no really) bummed...

I confirmed that in the manual, I will set my front speakers to small and see but sounds like a winner. What other affects will it have (i.e. does it affect the FRONT out signal)? I am running JL audio components in the front and Boston 6x9 in the back all pre-amp outs with internal amp OFF, Crossover THRU.

Other setup questions:

1) When listening to MULTI 5.1 channel source, if I have center channel set to NONE, will it down mix to 4.1? When I am listening to DVD-Audio it does not seem to, just not sure.

2) When listening to 2.0 DD do you get SUBOUT if front speakers set to small?

Thanks for the help, great forum!

Jay

Here is my situation with the SUBOUT when in MULTI modes. I am really confused on how bass management should be handled on the AVX2.

1) As stated above, for DPLII modes if front is set to LARGE, then there will be no SUBOUT -> OK this does not make sense but whatever, set it to small and seems to be OK assuming there is no high pass filter engaged on the front OUT.

2) When using any MULTI source that is produced in a X.0 format (DD2.0, DTS 4.0-QUAD) there will be no SUBOUT. Well for a car you always want SUB energy to be output so these modes sound thin without any SUBOUT :

For my setup what I really need is all 5 (FL,FR,C,RL,RR) summed and going to the SUB as well as the SUBOUT?

Am I thinking straight or am I again missing something pathetically simple?

Thanks. Jay

OK the AVX2 bass management is AFU. Basically there is no 5.1 DSP so what you get from the source material in any MULTI mode (Dolby digital, DTS, DVD-A) is what you get. So for 2.0 and 4.0 sources your sound is going to be without bass. Anyway I have solved somewhat with a mixer with the SUBOUT and the 4 channel output mix from my amp.

Also, no 4.1 downmix of DVD-Audio however it does support 4.1 downmix of DTS. So for DVD-Audio a center channel is a must with this deck.

I would love to complain about this deck (there are lots of little things that irritate me) but for the price you really can't beat it. The pioneer premier with full 5.1 DSP DVD-Audio takes an addition $1000 to get into.

yes it is the one with the 3.5 display. I was not planning on doing a review since I just do not have time. If you search around and read some of the user reviews you can get the general pros/cons with the deck. What I addressed in this thread regarding the bass management is not addressed anywhere and I wanted people to be aware of the caveats that are not obvious from reading the manual. It took me a few months of part-time experimentation to determine the bass management woes which can be solved as I did using an external mixer.
