He said it did happen in shipping and the speakers were kid of resting on each other so its not that hard to believe. He seemds like an honest guy and I beleive him. He said he insured them for $150 and he would refund me that full amount (I only paid 100) after he filed the claim.They'll sound normal when you seal up that hole. I'd suggest you get some black silicone. Put blue masking tape on TOP of the surround and apply the silicone UNDER the surround). that way it won't look like shit.
Whatever his excuse is, I won't believe it. That won't happen during shipping. If it did, it would be easy to tell by the packaging. If not, then he knew they were like that before sending them out.
dude if the guy told you this hole happened in shipping, that is some straight BS you can tell the hole was made when it was being screwed in place, its right by the freeking mounting holes, which look messed up also.Here is a pic

tape on top so the surround will keep it's original shape and do the above^^dude flip the speaker over, put a little silicone on your finger and rub it over the hole on the under side.
