I just bought a 10" MTX sub but I don't know anything about it and it doesn't say anything on it just "MTX" in black on the cone which is also black I also got a kind of old MTX thunder 421D amp and a sealed two 10" sub box. I got all of this for $40 was it worth it?

I have had a lot of MTX stuff (Roadthunders, 5500s, 6000s, 8000s, 7500s, 9500s) and every single one of those has exceeded my expectactions for it. A lot of people don't like MTX, but they have been super reliable and sound pretty good. I have run near double their rms to them and they took it no prob, even the roadthunders.

No offense, but I find it almost impossible to believe MTX rates their speakers at half the power they can actually handle. That would be 'underrating' their speakers on a scale never seen before, by any manufacturer that Im aware of. Remember, hooking a certain sized amplifier up does not, in any way, guarantee its producing rated output (either due to system voltage, gain settings, etc). Im not trying to question your enthusiasm for MTX products, but imo suggesting that MTX subs, virtually all of them no less, are underrated by half, is only going to lead to blown subwoofers by people who believe you.

Its true many people place emphasis on 'underrated' products, as if it is a sign of quality (which it is not). But many people also look at rms specs of speakers as a sign of quality and/or output potential (which is not really true either), and to underrate whole speaker lines by half would be a pretty stupid thing to do in terms of marketing.

just look at mtx's coil sizes these days 1.375-1.75 those are ok for 8s and bout it.

mtx was a really good company back in the 90s but like the rest of mainstream build up the name then ride it out...

pretty sure they make coils bigger than 1.75"....but i wouldn't right a company off as bad quality if they didn't

well guys thanks for all the input I think I made a pretty okay deal buying it I was kind of worried about it before.

take out the sub and look at the back of it? should be a model number.
I looked at it before and didn't see anything but I looked at it again and it was printed black on black so I didn't realize it but it says "10pd1624" "557" "01-12-18" and it said it was 4ohm.

I would like to know a little more about the sub if anyone knows anything about it i'll try looking up the model number.

It was clean power and it was for periods of 1-2hours straight. I was going by the power the amp was rated for at that ohm level, I'm aware it fluctuates depending on freq. I'm not saying they didn't get warm, or it didnt shorten their lifespan, but the coils still read the same when I sold them.
