I know everyone charges there own prices but im looking to get a 18 inch sub enclosure ported around 8 cubic feet since i have a van, what is the price range i should be shopping around for ..

also should i ask the builder regardless of the price for a portfolio of his work?

also any suggestions for southern calif box builders..

another thing i heard is boxes with no nails all glue have better sq?? is that true

I would say the nails theory is untrue. As far as prices, I'll let others answer. I've never had somebody build me a box so I don't know. I think DonH has done some enclosures at prices that were much lower than the competition and his work looks perfectly fine. Pro-rabbit is a forum favorite as well as a few others that frequent the forum. I'm sure they'll chime in soon.

Always Always ask to see prior work. Even if it is a shop, always ask.

Make sure they understand your goals for the system and they work with what is best for your goals, not just what works best right now. I try to help our clients to "future proof" their systems. Yes, we help with sub/amp choices very often with our clients and have had several very lengthy phone conversations when needed to ensure we(us and the client) are on the same page.

The nail/screw or what ever is a myth for SQ. The design and build of the enclosure will determine the output.

What sub are you using? And is there a reason you suggest 8ft3? Not saying you are wrong, just that depending on the sub, power, and goals a different volume may yield the same or better results.

Pricing changes with each vendor/builder here as does many things. The issues with larger enclosures is typically shipping becomes an issue, but we all do our best in our own ways to work around the shipping rates.

i dont even have the sub yet:*******:

but by next week i plan on purchasing it im goin with one 18 either dc or fi..

i have a sundown saz 2500d to power it

an i also have a van so space isnt an issue

I'd say a box that large will run 80-100$ just in materials, more if you need it painted or covered in carpet/vynal, etc. I'd figure 300+ assuming it's done nicely would be reasonable.

Getting a box that big done local will be the way to go since shipping would be killer. Definitely insist on seeing some of the guys work. Anyone trying to charge money for boxes should be able to show you what they plan to charge you for.

I like nails/screws personally... Won't change sound whatsoever.
