Have you or a friend ever blown a JL?

That had to be the coolest post of the year! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Personally, I've pushed 1000 watts through a pair of 12w0's and had no problems.

JL subs are just finicky. IMO- they simply require a little more time to tune.

Reliability issues? Not a concern in the world here.

Sure, every manufacturer has a bad brick in the wall, however, with as much as JL Spends on R&D, and their solid track record, I wouldn't even bring this issue to thought.

take it easy,

jl's are my fav, but because they all have foam surrounds you have to keep them out of the sun otherwise, the sun destroys them. Otherwise, if used properly jl decimates all!!!!

Reasoning ? That's a pretty superficial statement.

Yea I have to agree... I like JLs, but no sub decimates all...

I don't really think there is a best sub. I mean you can only get so good.

And there are several brands that each have atleast one or more models that are BAD A$$..

1. RE

2. ADIRE

3. SI

4. ED

5. JL

6. DD

7. Kicker

I know I forgot one or two

So I say there are like a TOP 10 Bad A$$ Subs... but No single best one...

Helotaxi you have no idea..... :thumbsdow

I put my 12w3 through pure hell the 4 months i had it, it was in a 3 cube, yea 3 cube ported box tuned to 38hz with out a ssf...first i had it on a rf power 360a2 (~400rms), had that on it for about 3 months and then i had an MTX 6500d (500+rms) in the same box and i tourtured that thing.....and its still alive to this date (but not in my posesion) and i listen to any kind of music out there....so yea, they last....

....so yea, they last....
Never said that they didn't. Most that do blow them do it through sheer stupidity, though. I know several people running well over twice the recommended power through theirs. They are properly enclosed and the gains on their amps are properly set and they don't jack the volume through the roof all the time though. JL's power ratings are very conservative. They are usually detroyed by exceeding their displacement limited power handling, not cooking the coils.

I have a set of 6 original 10W6s that are over 8 years old. They were running off of a 2100HCCA and I played the heck out of them. I just sent 3 of them to be reconed. One because the surround deteriorated from exposure to God knows what, the other two because the amp came unmounted during a serious car accident and went through the cones. I also have a 10W1 that is going on 12 years old.

Saying that they **** because they don't soak up a ton of power and get really loud is like saying that Ali wasn't a great athlete because he couldn't play hockey.
That's "Quote of the month" material right there, friend.

My 10W6's are almost 8 years old now, and still going strong.

For years, I only had 133 watts per sub, and was able to get them darn near full output (low-mid 140's, in a primarily SQ application).

JL rates them at 300 each, and that's known to be ultra-conservative.

I wouldn't say they are hard to get loud.

2 12W3's in a prefab MTX bandpass box running off of a 600 watt kenwood mono amp, bridged to 2 ohms and running a clipped signal. I had this set up for almost 2 years before someone told me how ****ed up it was. I can't believe the subs or amp lasted as long as they did!

Never had a complaint about mine not being loud enough, that's for sure. I was only running 133 each to them, too. Found the resonant frequency of my vocal chords one night. It hurt to talk for a week. I'm not saying that they don't get loud enough for a sane person, they get plenty loud for most. It's these 1kW+ idiots that always trash on them cause they don't get as loud as other subs. I for one don't want or need that kind of power and I don't have any use for a sub that "needs" at least a kW to "sound good." For most people it seems these days the quality of their bass is measurable in dBs. A lot of subs may give what they think is "tight" bass. They've got no basis for comparison. They've never heard "tight" bass. They've never listened to an accurate system. The bass in the systems they heard was so loud that they felt the impact so it must be "tight," right. Doesn't matter that you can't distinguish a bass guitar from a bassoon.

Big amps are cheap these days so you must "need" a big amp for good sound. It doesn't matter that your 1.5kW beast is only really ever delivering *maybe* 400W RMS to your subs and then only for really short periods of time because your ears can't stand the high SPL and you have to turn it down. Either that or the subs are made with high power handling in mind so the suspension is so stiff that it takes 600W to get the sub to play audibly so that 1kW really is needed. You know who loves that kind of inefficiency? Alternator and battery manufacturers.

Well you bassheads enjoy it while you can. While you can hear that is. I'll stick with my 133W per sub system and enjoy hearing all the music that you are missing. I will enjoy laughing at you while you pull your hair out trying to figure out how to get enough current to your power hungry sub and amp. Then I'll laugh even harder when you listen to my system and swear that I must have at least 1500 watts and I show you my cute little red amp rated at 400W into 1 ohm and my factory alternator and my efficient setup. If it isn't loud enough for you then you need to get your hearing checked.

I for one, personaly, have subs because I get a kick out of that feeling you get in your chest from bass. Thats whats fun. They are great for music to but thats the only true reason I even have subs. IMHO you got subs becuase you want great music and quality well others get it for different reasons now im not trying to go against you helotaxi Im just stating my 2 cents. rice burners do crazy shit to their cars cus they like it. People lift trucks and other vehicles becuase they like it. We have bass in our cars becuase we like it, regardless of WHY. Oh well nice speel BTW it had me riviting =) :thumbsup
