Jl W6v2 vs W3v3 for SQ

I dont' know about the W3v3 but the W6v2 is one of the best sounding subs i've ever heard.
Agreed.

The W6 is an amazing sounding driver. I'm betting the w6 would sound better, all other things equal (power, car, enclosure) and would probably get a bit louder (Manville said the w6 gets louder than the w7 up to 500 watts).

Chances are that the W3v3 is more efficient than the W6v2 just as the W6v2 is more efficient than the W7. Depending on the power level and the output that you're looking for, the W3v3 might be a better choice. Other than the W0 series, I've yet to hear a JL sub that was a slouch in the SQ department and the W0 weren't terrible.

bringing this thread back from the dead...

anyone have any more input on this? i'm currently constructing a system for my mazda3 (hatch). daily driver. sq system. i'm not looking for output, i'm looking for sq alone, my listening is probably 75% classical/jazz, with the remainder split between "everything else". i have no desire to "thump the neighborhood", i just want a good linear bottom end. fwiw, front stage will be jl c5-650's.

i have a 10w3v3 (sealed, jl spec custom box) in my wife's sc300 currently (front stage is boston z6's) powered by a jl 250/1. for my application, it doesn't lack for output. as i understand things (and i freely admit that my understanding is often faulty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif ) as a general rule bass output is easier to produce in a hatch vs. a trunk, so i'm not concerned that the w3v3 won't be "loud" enough.

so the question is, from a strictly sq standpoint, is the w6v2 a significant step up from the w3v3? either would be appropriately powered and sealed in spec boxes, i'm not a fan of ported boxes. although to be fair, i will admit that this may be because i've never heard one that sounds as good as a sealed box for the type of music i listen to.

i've searched this to death, and can't seem to come up with any type of answer (although maybe i'm not hitting the correct search terms).

and yes, before anyone chimes in, i know many consider jl to be "overpriced", etc. that's not the question.

If you're not looking for a lot of output, the W3v3 will probably suit your needs just fine. You know how it sounds already. If I were you, I'd find someone local with a W6v2 in a selaed enclosure and give it a listen and decide for yourself.

With either, I would probably go a bit over the JL recommended enclosure size.

w3s... but on the overpriced issue look into mmats pro 2.5s that way if you do more power in the future you can without selling the subs

thanks guys...

i stopped by at my local guy after i posted that, and he offered to do a temp setup of a w6v2 for me in the car so i can hear it and see what i think... a benefit of dealing with the same person for a long time... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

he is of the opinion that i'd be perfectly happy with the w3v3, but since i went in asking about the w6v2, he wants to make me happy and let me listen to it... since he'd make more money selling me the w6 and is telling me i'd be happy with the w3, i trust his advice (besides the fact that he's never steered me wrong before)...

a bit over the recommended size advice is duly noted... how much are we talking? they recommend .625 ft^3 (18X11X9).

My old man has a full sq system in two cars, one has a 10w3v2 with infinity componenets, JL 300/4, JL 250/1

The other is a 12w6v2 and Boston acoustics SX all around. JBL PBX500.1, GTO1004 to the mids and highs

Both sound ****ing great!

He listens to Jazz/classical 90%

fwiw (and if anyone cares //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif ), i ended up going with the 12w3v3... sealed, a bit oversized per helo's recommendation...

given that i don't need the additional output of the w6v2, and that the w3v3 isn't a slouch in the sq department, it's the "right" choice for the application at hand... as much as i "want" the w6, i don't "need" it...

it simply wasn't worth the additional expense of the speaker (not to mention the cost of a 2nd amp/wiring/etc.) for what might be a smidge more sq...

thanks for the help...

there are also other things out there to look into.

im a fanboy, but the image dynamics IDQv2 would have been right up your alley and is in the same catagory as the w6, but moar affordable. the v3 is new, and more pricey, but its worth it in features like the no fuss recone.

yea, i'm aware that there's other options...

for me, this falls under the category of "go with what i know"... i'm comfortable with the jl subs, i know what i'm going to get from them, and he gave me a reasonable price...

i know one of these days i need to venture outside of my comfort zone... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif maybe on the next one... it's hard to teach an old dog like me new tricks...
