JL W6v2 v. 10W7

i already have a JL 500/1 amp pushing my 10" alpine type R. after hearing many people sing the 10W7's praises, i was planning on upgrading to one very soon. however, my install guy told me that, in his opinion, the 10W7 is just a bass maker that is not good for SQ, but only good for SPL. He said the W6 is "much more musical."

i tend to put a lot of stock in his opinion, since he has been in the car stereo business for just under 3 decades. in general, I have gone for sound quality, not quantity, and whether i get the w6 or the w7, i will only be getting a single sub, and i will be putting it in a sealed enclosure.

anybody wanna weigh in? i always hear people say how amazing the 10W7 is (although i will be honest, i have never heard one) and i got the jl 500/1 amp knowing i would soon be upgrading to the 10w7 but now i am not sure.

My opinion is that neither the W6 nor the W7 would be particularly happy living in that QLogic prefab.Gonna go with a different enclosure as well?
most definitely going with a diff. enclosure. i was thinking about building one if my law school schedule permits, any off-the-shelf brands of enclosures of websites u can suggest prowler? thanks for your reply, but c'mon man, weigh in here! i know u know ur sh*t!

I'm pretty limited on my knowledge of enclosure design/construction, sadly.

I'm happy to have someone else with the know-how/inclination do it for me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

For off-the-shelf prefabs, though, I would say look to ProBox enclosures to start as many, many people have reported good results with them.

I heard a 10W7 and a 500/1....sounded awesome!!!! Loud and crystal clear. But to answer your question, the W7 is more of an SQ sub then an SPL sub, even JL states this.

i was under the impression that this was the case, so i was pretty confused when he told me the w7 is a bass maker that sounds that crap.

so listen, if $$ is not an issue, an wattage isnt an issue (i.e., you have an amp that can provide the w7 with ample power), would there be any reason at all to not spend the extra ~$150 and get the w7?

this is sorta interesting, though not dispositive, on the issue of which is better, according to JL's site, the 10W6v2 weighs 14.4 lbs. thats less than half what the 10W7 weighs (30 lbs.)

however, my morel hybrid ovations 6" components are extremely light, and they are unbelievable in terms of performance, and in terms of getting ladies in the mood, if u guys know what i mean.

dont ever measure a speakers capabilites by weight //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif .

you wont be happy with that woofer unless you have at least 700-800 watts on it. the w6v2 is a much better sounding speaker.
really? with all due respect given your much more advanced understanding of car audio, why would u recommend going 40-60% above the wattage recommended by the manufacturer?

if i am currently pushing a 10" Alpine Type-R w/ the JL 500/1 amp, would the diff. in SQ make it worthwhile to upgrade to the 10W6v2? thats the real question, i guess.

also, i know the only thing that matters is SQ, and that judging a sub by net weight is worthless. however, i figured that for the purposes of this thread, the fact that one of the subs being compared weighs more than double the other was interesting.

IMO, I wouldn't drop the extra $150 on the W7 for your application. You would be more than likely just as happy with the W6, and the only thing that would be heavier is your pocket.

I couldn't make a comparison because I haven't heard a W6v2, I just know that the 10W7 sounds great with a 500/1. I was actually shocked when I heard it. I figured it would need more juice but the 500/1 pushed it nicely.
