jl audio speakers were played with no high pass filter.

I am very upset at myself right now. I installed 2 pairs of jl audio c5-650 components. They are being powered by a jl 300/4v2. They are being fed the 75x4 that the jl amp puts out. To make a long story short, I somehow forgot to turn on the high pass filter on the rear outputs which were feeding one of pairs of c5 components. The front pair had the high pass set to 75 hz. The speakers were installed monday night(which was yesterday) so they were not used very much at all since this happened. I realized my mistake only when I turned the volume up a couple of times and I heard distortion coming from somewhere in the car. I was not sure which speakers it was coming from at first. I also smelled something strange in my car. I then took a look at my settings on the amp and realized that the filter was off. I ran the rear set with no filter. The few times I played the speakers loud I think the amp was ******* much more out of my battery during this time as even at moderate listening levels the light were dimming and the voltage was dropping.(I have a sub too).

Now once I made the adjustment and turned the high pass on, I dont have nearly as much dimming.

Basically I want to know if I caused any long term or short term damage to the speakers. They seem fine and still sound great but I am still worried about what I did to them. I was not overpowering them at all with too much wattage so I guess that is a plus but then again, I did smell something. Keep in mind that the install was finished late monday night and I did not even use the speakers most of the day today so how much damage do you guys think I did. I was hoping the passive crossover that came with the speaker had some kind of filter in it but it did not sound like it.

they sound normal...check

they work still...check

they arent distorting at high volumes...check (maybe?)

looks like youre going to be OK haha

I am so distraught right now over this. When the speakers were distorting, I had so much dimming it was crazy. I actually thought it was the subwoofer amp ******* to much power because the distortion was only happening on bass hits with the volume up. I simply thought the speaker amp was clipping and distorting because of voltage problems. How wrong I was and how shocked and upset I became when I saw the highpass filter forgot to be set on the rears. The distortion only happened with the volume up and on bass hits. The speakers sound fine now but I was hoping some people could chime in and tell me how bad this was for the speakers.

Yes they sound great at high volumes now. The funny thing was that they sounded fine even without the highpass set before, I only had the problems at the loudest listening levels. I should add that the gains were set with a multimeter to the target voltage that jl listed in the owners manual for the 300/4v2, that might be helpful info. I am so upset now.

I really dont think that that was the cause of the dimming...
I think it was because now that the high pass is set, I have much less dimming. What concernes me even more is that the voltage dropped so low when this was happening that the 300/4 started to shut off at high volumes because the voltage dropped. None of this is happening anymore. I also said in my original post that I temporarily smelled something very light but weird when the distortion happened.

The things that I feel are in my favor are that the speakers sound fine now, I was not overpowering them and that they were left in that mode for less than a day. Is it safe to say that I didn't do damage to the speakers that will show up in a month from now?

I am not really getting dimming after turning the high pass on though. The dimming is virtually non existent now. That is why I thought it was from the speaker amp. Mike, I sent you a pm too. I was hoping you could give me a reply. Thanks so much for all the help.

While I have been adequately assured by the great members of this forum that my speakers are fine and I am no longer concerned, anyone that feels they can add to this discussion should please chime in. Thanks.
