JL Audio 8" problem.

I have been doing car audio for years and have never seen this. Let me start by saying 1 week ago I bought 2 JL Audio 8W1-8's in a JL Audio box with a JL Audio 250/1 mono amplifier. These speakers have been sitting for some time. I hooked everything up and they knocked real hard. The other day I opened the trunk and saw one of them was not moving. I removed the sub to find out that it is locked up. It won't move but maybe 1 cm and that's with force. The part that get's me is that most of the time if one blows this bad, it will smell burnt, but this one doesn't. It has no smell at all. What I did notice is the box is filled with polyfill, and there is a lot of it wrapped around the cone where it connects to the spider. Could this have gotten into the the voice coil in the woofer and caused it to lock up? If so how would I go about cleaning it out? I don't mind removing the dust cover. The reason I am asking is I love these subs. The are AWESOME! and I cannot find another one anywhere on the internet. So if possible I would like to fix it.

Does the sub still have the mesh insert in the pole vent? I've used the JL's and other subs for years in dacron packed boxes with no issues...

Still, remove the dust cap and see what the problem is, they have a stamped steel frame so it's possible the motor may have shifted and locked the voice coil up, let us know that you find.

Yes it still had the grill on the vent. After removing the dust cover I couldn't find anything. I removed the surroung to get my finger's under it. I am not a weak man, but I could not pull the cone out as hard as I tried. Finally I tried a little harder and oops. The coil split in half and it pulled right out!! Half of it was still stuck inside though. I think I am just going to buy either a Punch stage 2 or a Kicker CVR 8" to put in it's place. Which one would be the better one? I am not looking to win competitions or anything, just something comparable to the JL Audio.

I am going to replace the one, and I was thinking on just replacing both. Crutchfield has two CVR 8"s for $99 so I might as well just replace both of them. But when I do get them I will have the JL for sale. Let me know if anybody is interested and for the right price, I might just give it up now! Thanks for the help guys. Where you at in P'cola? That's where I lived for the first 18 yrs of my life. Folks are still there.

I know. I really like the JL's, but I cannot find another one anywhere. I guess everyone has sucked them up and holding onto them. But I am over in Brownsville in Pensacola. What a wonderful place it is.
