JL 500/1 smoking

I just got a 500/1 from the forums and went to hook it up today. I was going to set the gains from the tutorial on JL's site, so I didn't have the sub plugged in and I had the gain all the way counterclockwise. When I turned on my car and started turning all of the stereo processes off the amp started smoking. What did I do? I know all the wires were hooked up right. Whats wrong?

could have the battery wire hooked up on ground or remote, same thing happend to me with that amp and it just blew my fuse. ****

No, I hooked up all the wires in the right spot.

The thing is, if it were a bad amp, it would have already smoked for the previous user, usually once an amp smokes, it wont smoke again the next time you plug it in... atleast in my experiences. Don't be too quick to call scam on this one... but I dunno, this is why I will never buy an amp without some sort of warranty, too many things can go wrong, now this guy is going to go back to the seller and go, "you sold me a bad amp!" then the seller will say, "it worked when I sent it", then what? its word against word...
